I think with modular you can achieve stuff you don't normally achieve with a soft synth. then again there is vcv rack, so you can have a modular inside your daw as well. Personally, I think being able to patch and touch them hands-on gives the real version an edge though. At least for me it is a lot more fun to create a patch on a real modular synth rather than doing it in vcv rack.
