I wanted to cut out small portions of a movie to use as inspiration and resave as small files.

I dont want anything bulky as VEGAS, just something where i can enter two cut timestamps, cut it and resave it.

Try Format Factory. FastClip should do just what you need.

AVIdemux (works on all formats, not just avi) - can trim fast, without reencoding
    https://avidemux.sourceforge.net/download.html

Also, ffmpeg (command line) - once you google search the command to trim without reencode, you can save it as a script (.bat .command) and use it every time

PS: I am using often chatgpt to give me various command lines for various purposes and is most often spot on

@thantrax , this is pretty good, exactly what i was looking for and free also.
also supports x265, x264, AV, which is awsome.

I need graphical shown what the video looks like, so any command line ideas are very hard.

Losslesscut, but is no so user-friendly.
Also: OpenShot, because it also can do a bit more if you need it.

does not work on windows, because it relies on Haali Codecs from 2013, which are also discontinued and i am not using codecs from 2013 to try to watch movies today.

The goal is to score the video parts, but thats simply not possible on windows with Ableton Live, so extracting audio from the video as placeholder has to to do it.

If Ableton only fixed video playback on windows. :suicide:

I will take a look at the other suggestions too. thanks.

Avidemux is what I use too. It is also good at quickly converting & reindexing crappy videos.. also a small and easy to use app, unlike some of the bigger video editing tools.

mkvtoolnix is my go to. Lossless, quasi instant (no re-encoding) supports many formats, free and portable, what more can you ask!

When you use Windows, there is still Windows Moviemaker available. It actually is a good program that is free. It was part of earlier Windows versions, but probably because it was so good, ms stopped distributing it. But you can still get it on the net.

Note: if avidemux works for your needs, stop looking any further. You get lost in all the different programs!!

Yes you're right. I mistook it for Avidemux, which for me does not have an intuitive interface.
