    Hi all,

I'm releasing a sample CD and I would like some reccomendations/tips fors buring the CD? I have access to both mac and windows computers with a CD drive.

The CD has a complex folder structure (lots of subfolders) and also multiple file formats.

More info on the CD is on my website for anyone interested.

    Thanks.

There are universal formats for cd .iso files that are readable in mac/pc/unix.

I used to use Toast to burn cd's on Mac, but its been years since I dd that. I have no idea what is current software under OS/X

    on pc
    ImgBurn
and Gburner are both free and work well, I've used them for years on 64bit windows. if you have 32bit windows xp available Nero Burning 4 0r 5 were good paid programs, though many were available with keygens to avoid that pesky payment..

There is a release of a program called Soundit! Pro 8, that is a 2 track daw for mastering and cd burning. I haven't tried it, but it sounds interesting. it comes with a set Sonnox plugins for denoising eq etc. - R2r released version 9 in 2020...

It has a lot of tools just for cd creation

and of course SoundForge12 is still out there and is a great tool for cd production.

here's a bit of info on soundforge for cd production.

Moving up to the first Pro version, Sound Forge Pro 12 supports up to 32 audio channels and sample rates up to 384kHz, with 64‑bit‑float number‑crunching as well as DSD file import/export (the base Studio version of Sound Forge can import DSD but not export it). Naturally, Sound Forge Pro 12 includes all the capabilities of the Studio 12 software and supplements them with four high‑quality mastering and audio‑restoration tools ported across from Magix’s Sequoia — a very popular mastering and recording platform in its own right. These comprise Wave Hammer 2.0 (a multiband dynamics processor and volume maximiser), DeHisser, DeClicker/DeCrackler and DeClipper, plus iZotope’s RX Elements audio restoration package, forming a useful range of core audio‑restoration and mastering tools.

Sound Forge Pro 12 also has the ability to record disc‑at‑once CD‑Rs as well as to author proper Red Book audio CDs, includes the POW‑r dithering algorithm for converting 24‑bit source files to 16‑bit word‑lengths, and offers configurable BS.1770 Loudness metering, the ability to export files in Dolby’s AC3 multi‑channel format, and a facility to create loops in Magix’s Acid format. Pro 12 also includes a range of versatile scripting and batch‑processing capabilities.

everything is circular, thats why records are round, cd's and tape reels too...

Bands made records on polyvinyl chloride, released by big recording companies.
bands made demo tapes, then cd's
bands sold cd's then they found they could make more money making vinyl records and selling directly.

its a loop, and now loops are back on CD...

    its just an idea...
how you implemented and what you do with it will determine if it is good or bad.

you know a CD doesn't have to be a physical medium, it can be an ISO file that can be mounted by the o/s...

i don't really see the need for a bunch of old samples reprocessed outside of any context, so why not use an old media format also?

If you are going to sink the effort into stuff you didn't make, you may as well go whole hog with it.

I stopped checking out the "demo files" when the first breakbeat is taken from Andy C Valley of the Shadows.

Actually it was resampled from HammerHead Rhythm Station. Wave files are an old media format and so are CDs. The Zero-G Datafile 1 are 22.1 kHz 16 bit .wavs. Resampling 48 kHz and 32bit doesn't change the sound. There's a PDF inside of the release that goes over DSP and resampling in relation to alising and bit depth. The CD is the portfolio for my masters in sound design. There's much more to it trust. There’s a digital release too.

Someone once told me that the majority of the source code for SoundForge was taken from Audacity.

I think if you flip that 180° you have might have it right. Audacity v0.xx was released in something like ~2000(1)?. I was using SoundForge and CD-Architect in the mid-late 90's on up to the time the original OEM sold the code to the first in a line of second string hack companies (Sony was one of them) that basically ruined it for me after that. Although I still used CD-Architect for quite a while after the parting of the original OEM... As far as Soundforge went I switched to Wavelab for my go to audio editor and have been running it ever since...

As far as burning wares goes I have been using IMGburn for years for general ISO writing to BLUray/DVD discs for data archiving. There's not much IMGburn can't do but it isn't pretty like a GUI app would be... Ashampoo Burn Studio 25 is a good one that sports a more modern GUI'ed look than IMGburn and has a version that was released within the last 6 months or so... IMGburn, as good as it is, hasn't been updated in over a decade. Burn studio is a modern day reminder of the old CD-Architect app from back in the 90's thru to the earlier 2010's. Magix released some versions of CD-Architect along with Soundforge when they bought it from Sony. CD-Architect is no longer in production but if you can score a copy of it, IMO it's THE best one for strictly audio cd production.

Another jackknife for CD Audio production is Steinberg Wavelab using the audio montage CD template. From there you can do just about anything to build a CD from the ground up and preview it as well. Then write an ISO file to disk for your final CD. You'll need something like IMGburn to actually write the ISO to a disc...

Acoustica CD,DVD,Bluray labelmaker once you get to know how to use it you can get pro results that look identical to graphic print companies. You will also need an additional good graphic program to work with photos, other artwork and text creation, finally your choice burning program or use the more elaborate ConvertX to add menus simple or animated with tons of features.Almost forgot good paper and cardstock, glossy, matte or others. Printer ink is a ripoff so I go to photocopy centers, Acoustica will let you print results as a pdf, I don't print very often so my inks would dry up, The Copy center cost was only a few dollars for few covers, if you do the setup on the copier machine yourself you save a bit more. * They specify Original artwork only.*

Still a little consfused about the mastering software everyone is mentioning. Wouldn't it be easier for me to simply copy and paste the folder content on finder/explorer? Whats the benefit of using something like Wavelab or SoundForge?

as others have pointed out, one way to easily verify such a claim is to just look at the dates. If SoundForge predates Audacity, (which it does) then it could not have stolen code from a program that didn't exist. No sense spreading rumours that are so easy to verify or disprove....

it goes back to making vinyl records. if you made a record with too large a bass waveform the vinyl cutting lathe would jump out of the groove. lots of other technical reasons as well, as records were made to the RIAA standard which set forth things like eq curves etc. over the years mastering has become the polish and mechanics of getting the final sounds right and compliant with any recording standards.

read up on standards if you want to go down that road, or find a history of mastering recordings, I'm sure there's a book or two on the black arts...
