If I understand what you are saying, the method would work just fine. Gluing the items of each track would indeed solve that, yes - as well as making it possible to render individual tracks at various lengths. By setting the source to Selected Media Items, it renders each item to whatever length they happen to be. If you glued the items of each track and they all happen to be different lengths, it would render them as they are.
