I really wish there was a powerfull 98-2002 era vst synth, ya know? i could really use such a product right now.. i would really like a fat in your face synth that on first listen says oh man this must have been made back then. i guess im referring to the typical synthesizers that were used in commercial electronic music back then..

Logic's ES 2 is perfect I guess, but yeah, it's Logic/Mac/Apple only

Other than that, I think you can pretty much get that sound with most of today's soft synths, Sylenth, Hive, Spire, Serum, Massive and so on

cubase 5 cracked..fl 11 64-bit (the only 64 bit host i use) cracked lol.. for synths anything that sounds good.. i have a pretty big Kontakt 5.5.1 (or whatever teh current version is) collection, alchemy, reaktor 5.9.2 and the enemble razor, i got a lot of other synths the other day from a thread i posted here but i wanted it deleted. alot of those synths are cool but didnt really cut the mustard for the sound i was looking for at the time i ended up going through a hell trying to program my own presets and at the end of the day couldnt do it and finally after about 16 layers of various synths got the sounds i was looking for and the sound was amazing, but people need to layer it up, one or two layers is boring, i found this out about a year ago i would say.

 

They didn't layer that much back than, it's the power of less is more, get fat sound from synth, use on-board synth effects immediately (especially EQ and distortion), tweak till perfection or just get some nice sound banks for synths you have

My sincere advice is stick with one synth and get most out of it, processing play big role too, go easy on stacking stuff, that should be mixed afterwards

Get Quadrafuzz, this thing on default settings should give you something nice immediately (it's an awesome distortion effect unit)

Try messing with synth having effects in chain, I always liked having distortion, touch of reverb and delay, than you can have chorus and phaser on bypass, maybe even EQ and compressor, that's what some synths got there anyways, but having it in effects chain is better, you can change synth, start new patch from scratch, it's still there, you can change order/units and etc...

Well, I love layers these days what can i say ;) i prefer to use layers over eq or compression for example.

 

We are talking about 98-2002 authentic sound here, so hence my answers and tips

It's your mixes, but you still need to EQ and compress them

 

Another good synth that does have some virus like sounds is DiscoDSP Discovery, i just remembered i have that installed to. that is actually a really good synth. i should try and use it again maybe

 

Most of popular soft synths do Virus and Nord to great extent

To be honest i refuse use any eq or compression at all in my mixes these days except at the mastering stage, and usually for me that is done by AAMS (the most accurate mastering software you can get btw without buying a million dollar studio) i love the effect of maximum dynamic range, eq and comperssion ruin that completely, even with expensive hardware. but again this is just my op.

 

Things didn't changed that much, supersaw is still popular, Virus is still hot

 

Authentic, to me, is punchy and raw sound. BUT a lot of typical sounds you hear are just heavily processed.
So, an audio example would be better.
We could all suggest a BUNCH of synths. But it is going pointless without what YOU consider as reference.

Sound quality reached an "almost like hardware" threshold with ACE and Synth Squad releases.
It was more than 5 years ago.

No, it's not, and said era will not enter the books as the golden age of synthesis.

But if that's the sound you're after you should check out discodsp discovery, rob paapen albino, z3ta, refx vanguard etc.

 

What i hear is trancy sound supersaw.
You'd better test what @fraifikmushi said.
If it still doesn't satisfy you, the problem is on the mixing side ;)
