i have no idea what the OP is talking about, but in case you mean that convolution is a type of filter, that is right, and nobody would ever have stated something else.

and no, convolution itself can not be used for distortion.

the technique (or FIR vs IIR) is (almost) identically. reverb is just longer.

A cab IR is essentially a "digital" (FIR) EQ. Unlike IRs that include reverb.
With EQ matching you can create a cab IR matching the sound before the cab with the one after.
Once you have the EQ you can export it to an IR wav file.
If there was an standard for EQ snapshots wav files wouldn't be necessary for storing cab IRs. That's part of Overloud's claims with this new "fluid" convolution.
It's not exactly something they teach in middle school. Totally legit and interesting question and topic, unlike your post.

There is a lot going into an IR other than EQ which also goes into it. It's an entire effects chain in a file. I'm always up for developers emulating less known amps and it is happening.

I've never been able to get close to the sound of amp without an amp sim with a cabinet under to accompany it with just complex eq matching it's curves. Hell even taking the cab section out makes my guitar sound like bitter ass.

Just be patient and remember the days when you used to beg for Peavey to drop their 5150 emulation but now you have several options to choose from when it comes to most common amps. Grindstein happened which surprised me completely for example. I do agree with you, there should be more oddities on the market. 100%.

WELL, just discovered something yesterday, there is actually impulse responses that do only a high cut/low cut and a bit more of EQ, these can be found in DI Boxes that have the option to emulate a cabinet. Like the one in that Behringer DI Box... so i was a bit right, it can be possible.
