It asks for how long you want to block it. It always creates a new rule, temporary or permanent, that's how it works. But you don't need to care what happens in the background, just click on block, that's all.

If you just installed a new plugin and Little Snitch pops up because "something" inside of your host app, which wasn't there before, tries to connect to the internet, it isn't rocket science to know what this might be.

And it's the beauty of macOS that processes can't connect to the internet by calling other DLLs outside of the current process to make a connection, because macOS doesn't have DLLs and won't allow it. I won't say it's completely impossible for someone to find a loophole, but so far I would have never heard of one, and I doubt Apple would even allow Software to hack macOS in this way. But even if someone found a loophole, Little Snitch would still pop up, even if it would be some deep system process making this new request, because it can even block macOS itself from phoning home to Apple.

And macOS would give you a pretty obvious pop up if Little Snitch would crash. It doesn't crash silently. It never crashed for me though.

However, nothing is 100% safe. Neither is your host file, because the app/plugin could just simply use an IP address instead of a domain name and you could add to your host file all you want, it wouldn't stop it from phoning home - while Little Snitch would still catch that.

That's why I wrote second (additional) security layer. Of course, to just rely on host files is stupid but if something fails this could be 'maybe' the extra 20% that matters. I'm on your side man, Little Snitch is a neat little app  and I love it but if I can exchange a bit less convenience for a bit more security then I don't have to think about it twice.

For me it doesn't matter if on WIN or MAC (I'm using both) but maybe I'm just a bit paranoid

You think so? After the last 10 years using it, I've always created the rules myself, permanently. And you're correct: I don't worry about what's going on in the background, or whatever you said.
Other than that, some of your post is almost verbatim to a comment of mine from last summer regards this! Funny.
So I have to agree, a network monitor is the only way to see if something is already on the inside, trying to dial out.
But then, it shouldn't have got inside in the first place, eh?

Thanks to all posting their lists and honouring the OP.
Can't find my file, but seems like it's all covered now!

Coloring in black will not break links because the forum's system create the hyperlink automatically if you write a valid address.
The only way is to add spaces or symbols in the middle of the address to make it invalid.

Alternatively, use a hosting for text files, like https://textuploader.com

Or just write [_code] links [/_code] (without the underscores)

    Code:
    www.wapo.com
    www.nyt.com
    www.disney.com

That may be the case if you only have one single machine. But when you have 10 or more, it's getting complicated.

I have a dedicated "fileserver" (in parenthesis bc it's only a little lowend box running Win10, but it is always on) where I keep all my machines sychronized with. This way I edit the HOSTS file on only one machine (and many other files with general settings) and synchronize it with Goodsync that runs on the "server". Besides others, the HOSTS file is always up to date, if I change it on any machine.

Yes, this is a great little tool to manage the Windows firewall.
