Thats crazy if something is actually making that conda release timebomb. still no issues here

 

use wireshark and sniff where it tries to homecall and block that IP address in your hosts file, i do it like this on macOS cause i dont trust apps like littlesnitch
edit: if there is a hint that its a cancerous timebomb a la fabfilter then wireshark would still be helpful since you can prove that it really does that if all connections are blocked

there are several timebombed releases with ff bundle :/
afaik only the latest 2 versions work properly

For now they do, but R2R didn't say anything about fixed timebombs which usually does, so I guess it's a mystery even for R2R.

Yeah I tried installing earlier versions and using the windows keygen, blocking ips via the hosts file and little snitch - I even tried the suggestion above re wireshark but I probably need to search some tutorials on how to figure that properly (any suggestions please?) - but still no joy! :-(

I tried fully uninstalling and reinstalling but every version does the same, as in asking for a key - which I input from the keygen then press enter - biut when I hit ok it opens my browser to a blank page - attempting to connect to "https://www.xferrecords.com/products/serum/1" - and blanks out the key, letting me get no further!

Given I've tried cleaning and reinstalling from scratch is there maybe some directory I didn't catch where serum is leaving data?

I forgot to mention I'm on OSX 10.14.6 and have tried Serum versions from 1.2.1.b4 up to 1.3.0.b6

 

Would you be able to point me to a turorial to explain the specific useage of Wireshark you sugget here, please?

are you sure you deleted all the files? possibly you're forgetting one file somewhere

to delete Serum (and all content / presets!) completely:

1) in Finder, command-shift-G (Go to folder) and type or paste:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST

delete Serum.vst

2) command-shift-G (Go to folder) and type or paste:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

delete Serum.component

3) command-shift-G (Go to folder) and type or paste:
/Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/

delete Serum Presets folder

4) command-shift-G (Go to folder) and type or paste:
/Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins

delete Serum.aaxplugin

deleting the preset folders is important btw, also had a .dat file in there somewhere. it could be that if you don't delete that folder it will continue to ask for the serial

Yep. I bought Serum 3 years ago.. I used it so much that I bought it so I wouldn't have to deal with the bullshit.

 

just close all apps except your DAW and start wireshark, maybe let it run a little while and close all background apps that use the internet via task manager, then open your plugins and see where they send their data to (destination column) and block that ip in your hosts file, its usually a very obvious URL like resources.arturia.net or configuration.native-instruments.com

There’s a couple more in the hidden user library that from what I remember, at least one was necessary to delete (luckily I don’t have to anymore since getting a license to stick)

User/library/preferences/serum.cfg
User/library/applicationSupport/com.xferrecords.serum

 

^^^ this is correct. /com.xferrecords.serum file holds the serial
only this file needs to be deleted, if you are having serial issues, esp with any other version

this last version 1.301 for mac works great. for anyone having issues, remove ALL serum files listed above
backup your preset folder if you have extra presets! be sure to delete the AAX plugin, preset folder and all other files
install this version as directed, installing v1.2x then v1.3x and replace AU/VST files.
then open serum and copy/paste this serial included into serum
it works fine on many systems, no timebomb reported
if needed to re-do serial for this or any other version, only delete the .com.xferrecords.serum file needed!

aah ok, should've known about those directories, but i didnt think and just copied the info from the xfer website

 

Don't bother, it doesn't phone home. It accepts keygen serials but then activates timebombs and trashes your user.dat so Serum asks for re-activation. Only patched versions work, none of the "tricks" work. If it is doing bad things to you then you do not have a patched version. Even the patched versions often have a few timebombs remaining, but at least Serum doesn't crash or get deactivated like with the unpatched version.
