Scott Weiland, a performer known for his grunge rock voice and struggles with addiction, has died, according to his wife, Jamie.

Weiland, 48, was the Grammy-winning frontman for a string of prominent rock bands, most notably Stone Temple Pilots.

Jamie Weiland, a photographer, confirmed the news of his death to The Times in a brief conversation.

"I can’t deal with this right now,” she said, sobbing. “It’s true.”

Overwhelmed by both commercial success and criticism, Stone Temple Pilots nearly self-destructed

A statement on Weiland's Facebook page posted at 10 p.m. said Weiland had "passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota."

"At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected," the statement said.

    RIP

Such a sad day... Though this does not surprise me since it's well known in the scene of Rock & Roll. Grunge Rock is like the cemetery of music. Cobain, Layne, and Weiland - have all left this world to go forth to another.
    Rest In Peace.

I'm thinking "dies in his sleep" might not be the full story

    Damn.
Just about 2 weeks ago I was listening to some of the great albums of the Grunge era, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, STP, ...
I remembered what a massive impact the Seattle scene had on the whole music-world (and myself, of course). So I decided to honour my absolute hero of those days (and still he is) and created the signature below.

And now I have to hear that another great figure of that era had to pass away far too early.
It's really sad and almost tragic that many of those guys just couldn't handle their own lives
