SampleScience on Piracy

My statement below is a really shitty analogy but nowadays, taking into account:
The Internet, 7.8 billion people, a great deal of people who are unemployed since the pandemic and the fact piracy in software, music and anything that can be copied has been around for MANY decades in one shape or form....
Anyone could say based on this that 'swim in the ocean, be prepared to encounter sharks'.

This being said, his attitude is good and stated fairly matter-of-factly.

What equipment do you need to make plugins? " The value is not only in the time it takes to develop the instruments, it's also in the gear it requires to create them."

Literally in the same sentence I said:

If you really don't believe that freely available media, learning materials and software have value to their users - whether FOSS or cracked - then you're on another planet. And of course those users can then 'add cultural value' themselves. How many producers started on cracked software? My point obviously went over your head, but I was agreeing that piracy is destructive to smaller devs (and open source projects), as most potential users end up just (eventually) buying and using Serum, Ableton etc rather than Surge XT or Ardour. And it's a genuine tension, as piracy has positive and negative effects. Would you argue that open-source software users are equally incapable of creating things of 'cultural value', unless they shell out? Or that Blender is taking away "room for culture to bloom" by putting commercial 3d software makers out of business, despite it giving access to powerful tools to many people around the world who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to practice 3D arts?

The dev has cognitive dissonance at max, not realizing that free advertising is free, or even that advertising is good. I guess if you have a good product, people will buy it. If you don't, you whine about "ermagerd lost sales".

And once again, other people (who should know better) try to gaslight and equate harmless replication with theft. There's a song about that:

I'll try to explain to you a different world view of things, in the hope that it will make you feel a little better. There was a world before the Internet and it is now a new digitized other world. Before the internet it was harder to get more customers, the markets were often regional and you sold through ads in newspapers and magazines. Today with your website you can reach millions of people worldwide. The Internet destroyed many jobs and at the same time created millions of other jobs.

There was organized crime before the Internet, with the Internet shifted the field of activity of many criminals. Today this is called online crime. Some people have their online bank account hacked and their money stolen. Some users have their identity stolen and then use it to make purchases.

Every participant who does business online and sells products there, knows beforehand about the risk of being hacked. There are also companies whose data is professionally encrypted with ransomware and unlocked for a ransom. The economic damage caused by hackers worldwide is enormous. This should help you, that you can say to yourself, I am not alone with problem and actually knew that before, that very quickly the party can be over.

Every industry loses a certain fraction of income to hackers. These losses can only be estimated and you can make your products a little more expensive to make up for the loss or you try to sell more products. Sometimes, unfortunately, it is necessary to lay off employees. In our language it is called the merciless competition or the ugly face of capitalism. You as a self-employed person must constantly assert yourself against the competition. Think also of the people whose company goes bankrupt and you are then unemployed.

Many people here have already boughtv your products. A few will also buy your software after testing it.
Simply because they say to themselves, good work, it is worth to me that. Many are simply too poor to afford it. The sooner you accept that you have been hacked, the easier it will be for you to deal with it. Be proud that your work is so good that now many people play and listen to your music.

Rather work on promoting your products better and be innovative and deliver an excellent product. If you do your job well, you will get customers who will buy your products. Positive reviews in online magazines will make you more popular.

You won't be able to stop the hackers, the reason for the hackers is that the rich don't give away any of their wealth. Everything for me and nothing for the others. The Internet has made many billionaires. But why should not the poorer strata of the population, also benefit from the progress and the Internet. The poorer strata of the population should and want to participate in the digital progress.

If people have to work for wages that are too low, they cannot afford anything. People should be given more money so that they can afford the products. Since this is not happening, they will inevitably use hacked products.

The oddest thing about this whole story is the fact that people let these scuzzballs keep filling up their mailboxes with their marketing bullshit.

Hit that unsubscribe button, FFS! I don't even let Moog send me emails and I own their effing hardware!

aggg kind of disagree on the killing sales, but in the rest i agree .. literally describes my final thoughs on piracy these last days... its super clear that we have no pressure of time to explore 100% the plugin/instrument (maybe in my case only) when we can use it at full characteristics (even if exist a full demo) and like with subscriptions i dont have neither the pressure of use the plugin/instrument cause i have 30 days or i feel like (and literally) throw my money without use...
but theres a conciousness alive that if we like the plugin, we buy it when we can. thats nice !

Found the email in my spam box but regardless, its my email and I'll do whatever I want with it, no need to lecture me.

Also, I don't think SampleScience's dev is a scuzzball by any means and I don't mind reading news from companies and developers that I like or that I find interesting.

I don't accept the unstated premise of the argument, namely that a capitalist system that relies on "intellectual property laws" to commodify software is a just and equitable system of rewarding labour. The product itself can be replicated almost infinitely at low cost, so it is not the means of production that is setting the price.

We live in a grossly unequal world and to expect everyone to pay the same price for a software product regardless of means is immoral.

Who has the know-how and has money or is creditworthy, can bring a product on the market and sell it. An entrepreneur who starts a business always takes risks. If his product is in sufficient demand, he can keep his profits; if his product is not in demand, he goes out of business and bears the risks himself.

In short, if you produce something that everyone wants, you will quickly make profits, but if you have competitors who have something similar, you have to be better and cheaper. The main thing is that the knowledge and skills of the people can be converted into products. Most people do not understand how the economy works, nor do they care how a company is doing.

This. Let people buy v1.0 of the software and wait until it matures and the bugs get ironed out, or when some time passes, like 3-6 months. There's no rush.

You need a PC to compile and test software for Windows and Linux. You need a Mac to compile and test it for MacOS (as you may understand you need a latest Mac to supply working versions to Mac users, it's not so easy due to compability). You need models of computers with fast processors and big memory, it hastens development, cheap notebooks make development a pain. To make well looking GUI you need a professional monitor (mostly for correct color rendereing but it seems this thing isn't of the first importance). And you need essential studio equipment as No Avenger said (good monitors, good interface, headphones etc.).

Where is the human being in the technical debate ?

What specialized training is needed. How many hours do you have to work a day.
How much money do you have to earn every month to pay your loan?

    about reFX:
Their protection was crappy and annoying, not to mention the ignorant support. (dont get me started on reFX!

They really played well with the - get Nexus and you are the best producer out there. And i will leave it to Mr. Schleiss that his sounddesign is very awsome. Been looking through some of the Virus soundsets right now, they are so eargasm.

Which is for SampleScience not the case. Just installed patched Kontakt and you can use his "Plugins", bought and/or from somewhere else.

I have never heard of SampleScience before it was posted on the sister page.
The Plugin and Sound market is really overfull right now and hard to reach people and to offer things ... Thats my guess.

If you are having not some kind of partnerships, you are going to drown as developer/sounddesigner full time. Like i wrote the market is overfloaded right now.

    my cents ...

If you ever want to go to TubeOhm: https://www.tubeohm.com He is really broad. Software - Hardware etc. You can even visit him and pay a small fee for it he shows you some - his wife also bakes cakes.

The customers of tomorrow are not yet born. Electrification is also progressing, especially in Africa. These are supposed to be the new customers of tomorrow. Who is positioned unilaterally should join forces with others, otherwise he is soon gone from the window and the users get as always no more updates !

Every day people come from the universities and their dream job is the World Wide Web.
They are still looking for people who can program software. As with all things, only the best and cheapest will survive.

I should have asked "Additional" equipment, but that was not the quote in the article. So if you take into account Cross-Platform development, you need an additional working system with the OS for each processor type. Fair enough on that.

Otherwise it sounds like the equipment every other digital musician has to have also. (And other more "normal" businesses). I was expecting things like those expensive Fluke multimeters or other things for tracing circuits. Something specialized, for it to make its way into someone's calculations.

They might have done if that was the only option. I believe that if people have the choice between paying for something or getting it for free, they'll choose free every time. If pirated software wasn't available, you either have to pay for it, find an alternative, or go without. Piracy definitely affects sales.

Yes, some additional equipment should be required, for example, when modeling analogue gear (I mean exact replications). In usual cases equipment is almost the same as for music making 'in the box'.
