    Salamander Piano - Kontakt 5

Not so long ago Alexander HolmFeel released a Creative Commons 3 instrument called the Salamander Piano.
I bumped into and decided to give it a go in Kontakt 5. According to the readme file, it is a Yamaha C5 sampled in minor thirds from the lowest A with 16 velocity layers and hammer noise releases chromatically sampled. It was recorded using two AKG C414s disposed in an AB position ~12cm above the strings.

I'd appreciate feedback before I release it to the world at large. Thanks.

    Sfz plus samples under Piano
BTW this is a huge SFZ and may choke some sfz players. Sforzando would be my recommendation as it does disk streaming.

If you use this please credit Alexander Holmfeel. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/us/

    Steps to change wallpaper.
    Download Elefant picture.
Click on the wrench to open edit mode in Kontakt.
    Go to Instrument Options.
Go to Instrument, the top tab.
Next to Instrument Wallpaper choose browse.
    Choose the Elefant Picture.
    Close Instrument Options.
Click on Wrench to close Edit mode.
Save as Monolith with Compressed Samples.
Wait as 568 samples plus 1 Elefant wallpaper get saved.

Note that this is an Audiosex exclusive!

Sorry the elefant kind of gets hidden by the interface, I'm a sound sort of designer, not an artist!

Also if you want to see my current project say I love Sax

can anyone make a new GUI ..... I suggest one with a big juicy icecream!!!

  11. For my ears it sounds really, really great and I am loving it. I do however have a qualm about the hammer sounds after the release as being a bit too upfront as I feel that they will get in the way further down in the mix. Can that be adjusted, and does anybody else feel the same?

    Just tried it. Very good!
Reminds me of "THE" Kurzweil piano used for years, but this one is more advanced, more real, and I have no complaint whatsoever. Yes, the release samples are clearly audible, but I don't find them disturbing, they're rather giving the real feel.

Loudness and tone variation across key and velocity ranges is well done too, no bad surprises here.
I would definitely recommend this piano for many situations where it has to sound real yet cut through the mix.

Congrats to building such a great instrument!

One thing, however: Making this available in SFZ or EXS24 or Sound Font format would make it much more universal, and one could still import it in Kontakt if required.

Thank you for this real gem!!

Wow the Salamander (the animal) needs some serious PR work. Everyone hated that picture so I've just finished reuploading the Salamander (the piano) without poor Sally the Salamander. If you tried to download the piano in the last 2.5 hours and couldn't my apologies (I have slow upload speed).

All you need to change the picture on the Gooey is a 640 by 250 PNG picture file. Then just follow the steps I gave to change wallpapers.

Changing the volume of the release samples is quite easy.
Push the wrench icon to open the edit mode.
    Press the Group Editor button.
Choose the group called 'Release' or '17'.
You should see a 'Volume' knob set at -35 DB. Just adjust that lower. Likely -38 or -40 would work.
Push the wrench again to close edit mode and save as Monolith with compressed samples.

Wow thanks fiction. I think that about the nicest thing anyone has said about any piano I've worked on.

I should stress that this quality of sound is because of the wonderful job that Alexander HolmFeel did in sampling and editing the samples. Check out his SFZ version at the link in the first post. Just between us I think it sounds better than the Kontakt version. Thank you Alexander for sharing these lovely samples and for all your hard work.

I 'released' the Piano Collection in the software news message board. Thanks for your feedback.

  14. Thank you sooo much, it worked like a charm. Now I have dialed in release to taste and am one happy camper as I had yet to procure a piano that sounds like the one in my head...until now.

Great! I'm glad that worked for you. It makes me think that I really should figure out how to add a release samples volume knob. My scripting is a bit weak I'm afraid, but it can't be that hard to do.

    I love it Kontakt Guru!
To be fair here the original GUI was butt ugly. I though it was kinda ugly cute, but others on other forums objected as well.
