Thinking of upgrading my current Ryzen 7 5700G to the 5950X to squeeze some more years out of my machine. I bought it a couple of years ago and its fine for the 70% of the mixing or producing process but in the last tail it starts to glitch and its becoming really annoying. It doesn’t seem like its the ram or some other component since in Reaper it’s the RT max can get to 100% and some cores in Lasso seem that they’re maxed out when the glitching and dropout happens. Does anyone have used it and have some experience with it? Does it hold up in 2024? Do you think it’s going to be a significant change in performance from the 5700G to justify the 300€? Upgrading right now to a AM5 system would be really expensive for me at the moment but I don’t want to make an investment that isn’t worth it. Thanks!

It is still relevant as an upgrade path. Make sure the motherboard BIOS is up to date & set correctly for production (not gaming). You should also have a minimum of 32GB of RAM preferably using only two DIMMs (less stress on memory controller & better latency).

The actual recommended RAM is 4GB per core for audio/video production. A minimum of 2GB per core for modern CPUs.

Yes, I have changed the settings in the BIOS and made all the recommended performance changes by DAWs manuals and I have 32gb of RAM. Thanks!

I have the Ryzen 9 5950x. It seems to be great even without changing anything. Can someone explain to me how i set it in bios for production and not for gaming?

I ordered the CPU 5950x on Saturday, I am still waiting for my package, I came from a 3800x when I see the cinebench scores of the CPU it will be a great improvement my 3800x hits the low 14000 in cinebench23 and the 5950x hits around the 28000 score multithread even more but that varies per setup

all cores set to same frequency multiplier (avoiding boosting spikes on individual cores), set power control to OS and make sure Windows power settings is set to max performance

    Hey welcome.
Well worth the upgrade if you are coming from anything 8c and below and you do. The 5950X is still quite competent. AM4 must be AMD's most long lived platform since the Athlon64 days. The only downside is there's nowhere to go from there, but giving you already have a working system with an 8c apu, just a cpu swap will really be like you got a new pc. Remember to make sure your cooler can handle the 16c cpu's heat output and don't forget you will also need a discrete gpu, the 5950X doesn't come with onboard graphics.
    Cheers

Yes, you should upgrade and invest, everything will be a little faster and smoother. You will benefit from the latest high-end know-how from AMD. This will allow you to live in the digital age. Perhaps it will be the last CPU you will need.

I have my 5950x installed one hour ago it hits 28000 multithread my old 3800x hits tops 14000 score multithread in cinebench23 im undervolting the cpu and testing it right now and overclocking it
dont go for the default settings it is set @ 1.4 what i think is ridiculous idle 50 degree i lowered the voltage what dropped my temps 10 -15 c celcius

With a CPU generation change, setting made need a tweak. This also applies per CPU (silicon lottery).

I would love to get some more information on how your bios settings are for the 5950x

I did disabled Hyper-Threading Technology because I thought 16 threads is enough for all i do and I was hoping to get better single core performance. And maybe better temperatures? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

also I did limit the temperature to 85 so it doesn’t hit the 90 in my not perfectly cooled case.

and I lowered the all core by -15 or something like that.

the memory I choose 3200 and cl18 - how much would faster memory like cl14 improve the music production performance? Would there be a noticeable difference?

I would appreciate some details from someone who truly understands this cpu. (Also how do you underclock the individual cores. I never understood how that works)

I had the 5950X for a couple of years until about a month ago. I initially upgraded to 9950X a month ago but it has issues, such as the microcode not working with some software (iLok License Manager, UAD amd SoundToys products didn't work at the time, and microcode 1.2.0.2a was meant to fix it but didn't for me, so I returned the 9950X). I also had USB Device Failure errors when using the 9950X (though this may have been the MSI X870 Carbon WiFi motherboard's issues and neither MSI nor AMD could resolve my issues so the mobo was returned too). I bought a 7950X instead and an X670E mobo.

I have to say, based on having recently used and tried a 5950X, 7950X, and 9950X, the 5950X felt good and snappy and wouldn't be an issue nor limitation for most, even in 2024. However, for regular mundane tasks like unzipping files, copying and pasting, converting .flac to .mp3 and so on, the 7950X and 9950X are much, much quicker.

Therefore, it depends on your use case. If making music with fairly non-complex setups, the 5950X is still plenty enough and more than you'll probably need. However, if you want more complex setups and to make things happen quicker to save you time, the 7950X and 9950X are definitely an upgrade.

My current base setup is below, so take it into consideration when thinking of the above as some components may affects the performance of others):

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
AIO: Arctic Liquid Freezer Pro III 420
    RAM: 96GB (2 x 48GB) Crucial Pro DDR5 @ 6000MHz
GPU: MSI Gaming X Trio 4080 Super 16GB
    NVME: 3 x 4TB Western Digital Black SN850X
    MOBO: ASUS X670E Crosshair Hero
    PSU: MSI A1000G 1000W
CASE: HAVN 420 with 8 x 140mm zero rpm case fans

I also have 7950X. I spent a good 3 weeks tuning it for minimum consumption while retaining near stock performance. 16c CPU benefits from undervolting a lot, since you can run more cores at lower clock, effectively getting extra performance for free. Ended up limiting the PPT (maximum power) to 80W. Even at full AVX2 load, it is dead silent, while being 90% of stock performance, at 50% the power.

i am using 5900x and it can run so much AA plugins and other ones in Studio One - specially on Reaper. just get higher ram i guess and m2 SSD as OS drive.

will upgrade to Ryzen 9 7950X but i am still very happy with my PC.

My older model before the 5900x is 5700g - the performance difference is huge.

This is a "BMW" pc mate. Happy that you finally got a new working pc after all the trouble you went through with the new and shiny parts. The case is also a very interesting choice, haven't able to get my hands on one yet, i only seen it on videos like from Steve GN, but given the detail on its design it should be an excellent case. My latest client build on a 7900X, the one that is supposed to appear on the ReFS thread, has gone through a ton of probs, most notably a mobo that died a week after i had the whole system ready and some others like a DOA Crucial ssd and a problematic underperforming 4 tb hdd (couldn't reach more than 50mb/s, like the drive was near the end of its life only it was brand new). Never had so many probs in one build for years lol. I was wtf. Luckily all parts have been replaced with new ones.
Hey man. It's been a while, good to see you. 80 watts? That is some cool tweak there. I haven't tried going this low, but it's nice to hear you can get this much performance even at 80w.
    Cheers

Yeah, all good and running smooth now, with a lean and debloated Windows OS too, with everything snappy and feels unrestricted! The case is amazing though. I wanted a 420 AIO ready for when I drop in a future CPU that needs more cooling, as they always do, so thought I'd opt for the case and AIO now. The case design is so good though, with loads of clever routing and space, plus back panels that hide a lot of the hardware screws and so on that make it look very sleek. I have the black version, and the motherboard is a sleek black bar the ROG screen, and with the black fans, it is now definitely a machine that will make me produce better techno with the blacked out look. Has to, surely!

Sounds like a 'mare with your latest client build though. Takes up so much effort and time to troubleshoot things sometimes and so frustrating when you find it's just down to some erroneously duff hardware issue!
