Here’s a demo, by software developer Geert Bevin, that demonstrates some of the performance flexibility of the LinnStrument:

Similar approach of Geo Synnth (that I really love for performance and polyphonic pitch-bend) + aftertouch and velocity...
Just remembering that traditional midi dont not polyphonic pitchbend and the bends usually are not a standard and do not obtain the same range performance of bends...

This demo is just amazing: It blows away everything I have seen till now about expressiveness.

This doesn't come cheap but hey, we have something special here.

Developer Geert Bevin has been working closely with Roger Linn on the firmware for the new LinnStrument, and is testing a new mode that lets it be bus-powered by devices like an iPad.

In the video above, Bevin tests out using the LinnStrument to control ThumbJam on the iPad.

Here’s what he has to say about the demo:

Last night I made a lot of progress adapting the LinnStrument firmware so that it runs off of bus power from my iPad Air.

This is a demo with ThumbJam’s Bass Bowed sound, played with note-per-channel MIDI, recorded straight into Auria over Inter-App Audio.

The LinnStrument bus-powered mode is still experimental, but there’s a good chance it will end up in the next firmware update. Note that this will only work with iOS devices that have lightning connectors, 30-pin connectors don’t provide enough power.

Bevin use of note-per-channel MIDI control is what allows him to slide individual notes around while he plays, unlike traditional MIDI Pitch Bend, which affects all held notes.

    The first video-demo looks impressive.

But... then I ask myself... wouldn't it be easier to actually play a real guitar?? :bleh:

I will leave that question open

    EDIT 2.Nov:

It looks like there’s some pent-up interest in Roger Linn’s new LinnStrument.
The first batch of 37 LinnStruments went on sale last night. As of this morning, there is(was) one still available.
The first batch of instruments is expected to ship between November 17th and December 5.

Free LinnStrument Update Adds Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression & User Firmware Mode

Developer Geert Bevin let us know that Roger Linn Design has released an update to the firmware for the LinnStrument, adding support for the new Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression specification, a new User Firmware Mode and more.

Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is a proposed MIDI specification, designed to provided a standardized way for hardware and software manufacturers to send and receive the expressive musical performance data that multidimensional controllers, like the LinnStrument, can capture.

As a point of reference, here’s Roger Linn demonstrating the three dimensions of expression that can be captured by his LinnStrument controller:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTj6hQX9y9E

Linn is controlling Bitwig’s built-in synth, Polysynth, with full multidimensional expressive control. This is possible because both the LinnStrument and Bitwig support MPE.

The MIDI specifications for Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is proposed specification, at this point, but it already has the involvement of people from Moog Music, ROLI, Apple, Bitwig, Haken Audio, Keith McMillen Instruments and Madrona Labs.

Another interesting new feature in the new firmware is the User Firmware Mode. This mode lets the LinnStrument be used as controller for any type of custom software.

Here’s an example, via Tim Thompson, of the LinnStrument being used to control UniLooper:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLocbTY4g2Q

UniLooper is a four-track MIDI looper that does visuals as well as audio, using the pitch, channel, and velocity of the MIDI notes to control the position, behavior and size of heavily-processed visual sprites.

You can find the complete change history on the LinnStrument Support page.
