Jimmy Buffett, the singer, songwriter, author, sailor and entrepreneur whose roguish brand of island escapism on hits like “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise” made him something of a latter-day folk hero, especially among his devoted following of so-called Parrot Heads, died on Friday. He was 76.

One of my favorites back in the day. RIP Jimmy. You will be missed.

 

Very sad indeed. Buffett was one of the nicest human beings I ever crossed path with. The following story illustrates that.
I had a friend who went to federal prison on tax evasion charges. "Uncle Jimmy" was his all time favorite artist. My friend was a real "parrot head." One day over the telephone, he ran by me the idea of having Buffett go to the federal prison, and perform a concert during the Christmas Holidays. I had met Buffett at my studio in Miami, and while not close friends we chatted a dozen times each year. I contacted Buffett, and luckily he told me that he would be performing a concert at Florida State Prison in Raiford in December. Buffett told me that if I was able to arrange things with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he will be willing to do it also in December.
Convincing the BOP of allowing a concert at Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee proved easier than I thought. Tallahassee FCI was a minimum security facility back in the 90s.
As promised, Buffett performed there in front of 700+ federal inmates, guards and their families. Talk about bringing a smile to everyone's face! For the 2 hours that the concert lasted you could see that those inmates did not feel imprisoned, and guards embraced them as human beings not as convicts. All of it as a result of Buffett's kindness, and humanity.
He died a billionaire but never forgot his roots. Always treated everyone with respect and warmth. He certainly will be missed.
