I have an option for you, but I'm sure your not going to like it. I won't even say it because you already know what it is, Catalyst *yes* .

I recently tried Studio One and was really impressed with its workflow. Its definitely a lot better than Logic and Protools when it comes to that aspect of things. It still wasn't enough to get me away from Live though. In my opinion its always good to produce in a different environment every once in a while, you'll go insane if you don't. Hopefully you get the problem resolved because Studio One is pretty sweet.

Yeah because Macs never have a problem running software. I think it has more to do with the fact that my computer is 6 years old rather than the fact that it's a PC. Unfortunately I'm going to have to ditch Studio One for the time being because in addition to the processing problem I am noticing that timing has issues too, I put a Lexicon on a snare drum and suddenly shit sounded weird. Still it has a pretty slick workflow and if they iron out the bugs and keep implementing new features it really could turn into some pretty stiff competition, though in my opinion it's still not there yet.

I'm sure it will be okay if your system is new and you're running Windows 7. Even if something were to happen you could always just uninstall it.

My pc is over 6 years old, 2 core, no plugin soundcard, just what ever's on the motherboard (using ASIO software), basic nvidia graphics card, 4Gb Ram Windows 7 32bit 500gb HDD + 2 external HDD
and S1 works very well, I find that it is VSTi's that will gobble up virtual memory and cause problems, so I just bounce the offending ones (dry) and then add any FX to the bounced track. Open AIR (reverb FX) is known to eat memory. And any crashes with S1 I have, are always vsti's

Wow I'm surprised that you're running Windows 7 well. Yeah it's weird, I think it might be something with the shitty Creative drivers but there isn't anything I can do about that at the moment since there are no new ones available. I had issues with more than 1 plug-in (Battery and Diva) I am also getting timing issues in S1 so I went back to Cubase for the interim. Also Cubase still is a much more mature platform at this point though Studio One might soon be stiff competition.

Win7 32bit works without any errors, tried 64bit, it worked but not very stable (blue screens), also have OSX Snow leopard, Win8 32bit, XP(for older software) and Linux working within Virtualbox without any major problems either.

Well at least something is going good for someone else, that's cool too.

    frito
I also can't get a single VST3 running in Fl Studio got like a million versions already. Ridiculous.

I use S1 both on my old laptop (2,1 Dual Core) and on my new Audio-PC (i7 2600K), and couldn't notice any high CPU-usage on neither of them.

Besides, it is a lot (!) more stable than Cubase 5.

My first advice would be to get rid of the Creative soundcard, and buy an interface/soundcard which was specifically made for music production (you will need this anyway).
If that doesn't really help, you could think about improving on the PC-hardware.

If you use voxengo plugs, you can try decreasing or even turning oversampling off to decrease CPU. In options, you may also switch to min-phase resampling (as opposed to lin-phase resampling ), unless lin-phase resampling is important for you. Other plug manufs (such as meldaproduction) may have similar CPU<>quality options.

Version 2.5.2 works as well as AIR old v. one. Old dual core E 8400, 8 Gigs Ram, win 7 64 optimized for DAW use, everything working here like a charm, also under heavy loads.
    Only two issues (well known)
    • freezing when fast closing program
    • some problem with my old EMU 1820 (no more supported from creative.....blaha, no money to change it)

    Suggestions:
    Try to avoid heavy reverbs
ALWAYS BOUNCE TRACKS AT THE END!!!!!! (and never render them before doing it)

Studio One is Rock solid and for me the best

So far I'm having good luck when it comes to CPU usage on Studio One 2.6. Certain things like pitching audio while playing and using heavy duty plugin's like Spire and Diva cause massive spikes for me. Waves stuff runs quite well but not perfect. I find that bouncing automated VSTi's is rather hit and miss, some plugins bounce perfectly while others totally freak out (Like Waves and Direct Wave) . Sometimes its just best to make a physical copy and then bounce that. Let's just say I'm not a big fan of ASIO (Tortured past/present).

When I moved to a new computer and Windows 8 the problem was solved. I think it doesn't work too well on XP and older systems.
