After the whole debate on sampling, midi, musicians and such, I thought I'd bring up this amazing video of "Smack My Bitch Up" - reversed engineered. So some of you might look at it and say, "well, I can do that, it's easy, there isn't much to it" but on the contrary, this was all derived from some ideas borrowed and mainly Liam Howlett's ingenuity. Having the imagination and creativity to come up with this idea is what makes his productions stand out from the rest! Not just anyone can come up with these borrowed sounds and ideas. Without the idea, the production is nothing.

Chemical Brothers weren't much different. Could anyone emulate these guys sounds? NO, not really, I haven't heard many artists like this to this day!

    Oh man!
It was just a lovely discussion.

    Composer VS. Producer (or DJ)
Almost 2 different people with different capabilities.
I still love the first kind more. He knows the music better.

Awesome! Then think of no Ableton or plugins back in those days.. Probably made with an Akai sampler, outboard gear & lots of overdubs

    Wow! Thanks for sharing.
Respect to mr. Howlett, what a guy...

He did most of his work on Roland W-30

Actually, it was simply a question asking about mastering initially, then you went completely off topic with it and turned it into a debate about "musicians". Pointless really. Oh well, I don't want to start another one, since I know the annoyance I will endure if I do so! So we will leave it at that!

He was using Cubase for this one with plugins. He started using software in 94 I believe, mixed with some hardware.

saw that video a while ago and well i said to myself, i had no patience to go and search for such material and combine in that way and that is for sure an art. you have to train it like composing melodies, its not done in a short time.

weren't it my neigbours from groningen, Noisa that just rebuild-ed a whole song from the prodigy with the same hardware just to remix a song?

I love Chemical Brothers' summary of their sound when interviewed a few years ago and it stuck in my mind. They said their aim was to be able to recreate The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows using samples and synthesis and that's what they are trying to reach. When you hear some of their songs, it makes complete sense as you can hear that Tomorrow Never Knows big beat drums coming through.

I remember grumpy old guitarists saying this to me when I bought my ATARI ST, TB-303 and Akai-S950 sampler back in 1993

I always thought the title "Producer" is incorrect name. They should be called "Directors" as in the film industry.

I wonder if there's anything like that for the Led Zep drummer John Bonham....will have to search. By far my favorite drummer other than The Police's drummer, which I saw live in 2007 by the way!

In the world shortage of musical instruments and knowledge, every property owner was a legend.
They were just simple practicers benefiting from the credulous simpletons' simple mind.
