When he first came out I kind of made fun of him (and Steve Reich as well although I liked his music more) and minimalist ideas (ah-AH! ah-AH! Diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly) but it appears he had the last laugh because most modern music, either pop or orchestral, is now basically composed of four chords without much rhythmic syncopation and the interesting aspect in music is all in timbral evolution. You hammer the same chords to the point of mantra with a very minimalist melody (if there even is a melody) and it's just all about how you manipulate the sound and vibe of it. This isn't a get off my lawn old man put down either, I'm not making any value judgment about whether it's a good thing or bad thing. I really think that he simply saw the future.
