Hey, if it's still working fine for you, keep on using it. I'm surprised that those Korg VST's run OK though. I just booted up opsix to check and the CPU consumption varies between 40% and 500% on a single channel of Ableton. The fans are so loud I feel like my computer is about to take off and fly away.

(OK, on running it a little longer, I find that it drops down to a more usable speed if you close the VST window. It seems to be the graphics that are the CPU hog. But I do like to be able to adjust the controls when a track is playing.)

I think that the business life of a PC probably has something to do with accountancy and how they measure the value of their assets rather than the useability of the PC's. It's hard to imagine that something you're just using to run Word and Excel is going to need replacing after three years.

i just googled and found this
Can I use AHCI for SSD?

AHCI supports Windows, Linux, and UNIX operating systems. Note that SATA SSDs do not use AHCI, which is the software protocol between the CPU and the SATA controller. The much newer NVMe standard is replacing AHCI-enabled SSDs in high performance environments.14 May 2019

the way i plan to do that is copy the folders over to a folder in E called transferred from C
i.e. just drag them to that folder in E.
Is that how most people would do it?

In earlier days ppl were suggested to keep a small amount of an SSD free for reallocation purposes, like e.g. 20 GB out of that 500 GB drive. Don't know if that's still valid.

On the other hand, partitioning is always a good choice because then you can keep your data away from the system partition. I always use around 200 GB for a windows system and the rest for personal data. But that's up to you to decide.

I advise you to get familiar with the installation process in general and the usage of dos (command line) commands. Youtube is a good source here. Looks like you have no expertise in that subjects yet, but you should have before trying out any repair or fixing solutions.

    hi,thanks for reply.
a couple of things im curious about from your reply.
    1. 200 gb seems a lot to keep for windows does it not?
    2. i wont be doing any command lines when installing new ssd and reinstaling windows, will i?

As I said, I'm starting to feel as though my PC is coming to the end of it's useful life -- but given the chip shortages and the impact that's having on component prices, I'll probably shelve that for a couple of years and upgrade my own c: drive.

I'm currently running a Samsung EVO 250 GB, that really just hosts my OS and some frequently accessed software. I think I'll switch in a 1 TB SSD and move a lot of my audio software over to that. Congrats on your new drive though. You definitely won't regret it -- if anything, you'll wish that you'd done it sooner.

I'd also go with a fresh install rather than transferring your old partition to the new drive. There's nothing like a fresh install to make a sluggish older machine seem like it has a new lease of life. I wouldn't bother with multiple partitions -- unless you were doing one of those rescue partitions, but I think those are generally better installed to a different partitions, because if you have a hardware failure, you're not going to be able to recover anything from that,

    1. It won't use that much storage space from the beginning, but it fills up on a daily basis. Updates, new installations, programs you use fill up space in appdata/documents/u name them. Plus, if you install programs in the default paths and not outside on another partition, they also fill up your c: drive. You will find yourself soon searching for unwanted/unneccessary data to free up some space if you go lower than 200 GB - at least that is what i found out. Keeping 200GB just for windows safes me from that "problem" for at least 1 year after installation. It's an advice from me, as i said that's up to you to decide.

    2. No, but you definitely will do if your system doesn't boot and you have to use repairing tools on the command line. And in the end it's not bad to know some stuff in there.
