Exactly, and the preset or rompler bashing is especially hard on edm sites like reddit edmproduction, "making your own sounds is much better, because it's unique blahblah", many people there design sounds by themselves, but it still sounds like a preset bank from loopmasters lol

If you know a little about synthesis and you can make many bread and butter sounds quick, it's definitely better and less time consuming than preset browsing. But I hate those guys who tell some beginners that they should make their own sounds, because I think, for a beginner it's more important to learn how to arrange, making good melodies, or how to make a track that doesn't sound like shit, as fast as possible. If you are a total newbie it can really get frustrating if you want to learn too much things at the same time, so the risk is higher, that you just quit after some time, and synthesis isn't really that much important (just like mastering, many beginners want to learn mastering after 2-3 tracks...). Nexus is kinda great for beginners, but the developers and the prices are not... If someone who wants to start edm production and wants to know which software is the best for starting, I always say "get the Team Air Nexus (and Sylenth1)" The synth sounds in Nexus are not that special, you can make them in any synth, but the sampled sounds are really handy, especially for beginners.

Yea, you think people shouldn't really have to learn the craft thoroughly, just enough to enable them to start outputting mediocre stuff?
Why should it be easy? its not washing your car, its art.
Everyone with a laptop makes music - dont you see the result of that is that the place is filled with terrible amateur wannabe music?

Maybe you have a point, but I don't think that romplers or presets are the cause for all this shitty wannabe music. If everyone makes their own sounds most people would still produce the same shit, I think xD It has always been like that, but now everyone can post his (shitty) stuff on the internet.

Most of the reason why we have tons of terrible music is people selling whole templates which loads of people buy or torrent then change half a dozen notes on and push the track out as their own, not by taking a handful of presets.

Nothing in the top of any mainstream charts is made like that.
And not any tracks I listen to. Do you listen to the random "Free Beats" Hip Hop on YT or something? I would agree with you there!
Saying "we have tons of terrible music" is subjective but you are projecting it outward.

If you have proof of at least more than some nobody on SC using just templates, then I'd be interested to have a laugh at it!

My gosh! How did we get to be so off-topic? haha

I don't really care about mainstream pop but in terms of electronic dance music its pretty prevalent. For example the biggest one where its constant is the trance genre for starters - literally thousands of tracks are taken from templates its ridiculous. Then you have a second layer where they've used a MIDI pack for the entire melody without changing a thing there have been countless 'copycat' tracks where multiple producers have signed to different labels using the same MIDI. If you follow the trance scene in the last few years (as I do as I used to DJ that genre for a decade) it's got the stage where a ridiculous amount of tracks sound almost identical mainly because they use a) the same presets or b) the exact same base template.

You even had sample companies like Freshly Squeezed Samples having to do DMCA requests because people had taken their Dave Parkinson pack (which contains a number of Logic full project templates) and literally got the tracks signed without changing a single f*ckin note.

It also happens in tech house and some other genres regularly as well.

That's without the people getting caught taking someone else's entire track, pitching it up/down a bpm or do to circumvent Shazam and getting it signed to a different label. There's a whole stream of newbie producers who are looking for the quickest and easiest route by any means necessary.

Nothing wrong with using presets, since most of us layer them anyways, you end up creating a different sound overall perhaps, but some sounds in EDM are constant, just the nature of the beast!
Using construction kits isn't something I respect though, didn't Steve Angelo use one which ended up as a release!? To me, that's lame!
Presets are just fine, think of sounds as colours (paints), if you paint, are you going to create each colour from scratch or buy them ready made?! You then mix them anyways which is what mixing does, so people who talk about creating everything from scratch usually don't make decent music at all! They waste so much time working on sounds and the technical aspect, they forget the actual music! There are sound designers who create patches every day and they are good at it! I also find that browsing through presets can inspire you to come up with something great, just like most of the music is created by playing around.
