Depending on your DAW and its settings it may made a backup. Did you try to search the song's name?

Other than that, I've heard that recovering even an overwritten file is supposed to be possible, but you'll need very special tools for this task. But that's beyond my skill.

I'm on ableton live but there is nothing in the backups files and I searched on the computer by name and even tackle the trash with programs such as recuva and recover it but it did not give anything.

OK thank you! Will wait for an other reply :O)

Try EaseUS Data Recovery Technician, it works for ableton live projects, make sure to run deep scan, type in the search bar .als and look for creation date

Right click on your file, go to properties then previous versions and check if it allows you to go back to an older version of that file. If not, you can use the tool @GT33 mentioned

For complicated cases I always use O&O DiskRecovery.
If you want to find files in the deepest corner of your Disk, you should try "Everything Search Engine".
    Uploaded it here: Everything.rar

It indexes every drive on your PC and finds every file immediately while your're typing.
Maybe there is a backup/copy somewhere hidden.

    But I have to say:
When you just delete a file, your chances are good. When you overwrite a file, in most cases it's gone.
That technique (overwriting) is used by most "secure deletion" tools for permanent data deletion.

overwritten is more difficult to recover as if you simple windows deleted it (for few bits of the file gets overwritten), but overwriting a whole file will make the previous file unaccessable - so it likely gone.

True, however, Volume Shadow Copy Service is included, and turned on by default, in all editions of Windows after Vista. Using the Shadow Explorer you can acess previous versions of any file, even overwritten ones. Plus those that don't show up when using the "previous version option"

Shiiiiiiit. Maybe the OP has not turned it off. Even with earlier Disc Images you can get earlier versions of the file using Shadow Explorer. Always good to have backups.

If that file was super important you can do an entire system restore, if you have a restore point before you messed it up.

hmm if its gone, its gone lol no seriously, if i deleted one of my ableton projects - its nothing to important to me ... i can always create something better or fresher.

but back to the topic, by default Shadowing is ON, so OP is maybe in luck!

There is no need to do a whole system restore. That is why I told the OP to use the Shadow Explorer.

hmmm, Ableton (10+) automatically creates backups of the the 10 most recently saved versions. So if you're on Ableton 10 you should have no problem...or did i miss something ?
