My story was much like yours. Was on Pro Tools and felt the need to switch to something else.

Tried Reaper once - It did not go well. Didn't go the second time neither.

And then on third attempt I deliberately did some vocal recording takes straight into Reaper. Took about a day to wrap my head around basic stuff. Then I realized Reaper actually allows me to do some things the way I want, opposite of PT which is WYSIWYG.

And our love grows since then ❤️

    tip from me:
take a look at View menu, explore ALL those additional panels and features,
and if you find them useful, don't hesitate to Dock them into Tabs all over Reaper's edges:

This might be interesting to you, it makes Reaper behave like Pro Tools:

The problem with such a configuration pack is that it can make it really difficult to learn Reaper and keep up with feature updates. Over the years I have learned the hard way that sometimes it is better to learn a system first and then - after some time to get used to it - only intervene where there is a real need for change. This goes for themes, scripts, configurations, etc, etc. JM2C

Something I see very often is that Reaper newbies get into the fancy stuff first. They change the theme. Change mouse context menus because they seem too complex. Playing with scripts that heavily modify functions with deep hacks. And then they are surprised that they don't have an overview anymore and can't cope with the functions or that these script functions bring unexpected negative side effects. The script "Toggle hide/show child tracks in folder tracks in TCP" mentioned by @shake_puig is such an example..

However, there are things that should be changed and I would advise a newbie to start with some of the following changes (but I wouldn't bother changing mouse modifiers, since there is a whole new editing/mouse modifier system on the horizon) and then get familiar with Reaper as it is.

Useful action script for Sound Designers
<It's even better if you put Global Sampler on the Monitoring FX! Then it also records when you 'scrub' (ctrl+middle mouse button) or do other stuff in Reaper without actually pressing space bar.>

here is video about this action jump to 1:53 timecode:

Script to toolbar icon to toggle any Fx Open/close, that of course if only added in the project. I use this lately as RapidComposer got updated they removed the option "open in separate window" which i used a lot to minimize the RC window while working in DAW, it was a bit annoying to open up mixer or to enlarge the TCP to just open and close the FX gui window thingy.
So found this script very help full, i added it to an icon to the main toolbar to bring up RC without clicking it in MCP or TCP

    Script:

You can save thread space and keep things neater by putting scripts & etc in spoilers...

Spoiler is best to save space

I forgot to mention that the track has to be highlighted/selected, for that script to work.
Here is something, made with chatgpt, Im not a programmer, so anyone interested pls go thro and mention if there are some errors.

Script for a Toolbar Icon or shortcut to open close VST
This is just a script for toolbar icon and shortcut key as replacement for the separate, floating and minimizable gui window for RC
For this script to work RC has be in track 1, which i normally use, doesnt need to armed or highlighted.
