Share your Reaper tips and tricks or actions that you find interesting.
    Here is one found recently.
There is a reaper action for media explorer that i wasn't aware of.
Its "Preview: Play reversed" {shortcut key Shift+left arrow} which reverses the media or loop u r previewing in media explorer.
    and
"Preview: Play (cancel reverse playback)" {shortcut key Shift+right arrow} which cancels reverse playback.

Edit: This works for audio only, but works on MIDI, it reverses midi but unfortunately it doesnt work, Like it does on Midi Editor.

(P.s: there are threads that are titled tips and tricks but i find that its more about a YT channel thought i should create one.)

Wow. So many years with Reaper and I didn't knew it can play reversed in media explorer. Amazes me over and over again.
    Thanks for this!

An action I use quite often since it was implemented is dry render, for a track or the whole song. This way I can immediately find clipping or if I've made a track louder with the inserted plugins.

    Beside the point comment:

I envy you guys. I love Reaper, the simplicity and immediacy it offers, the David vs Goliath attitude and all, but I always start learning it and end up dropping it for my usual DAW.

I'll follow this thread with great interest.

if you don’t mind me asking, what is your usual DAW? and what do you think pulls you back to it? just curious. personally I end up using ableton and FL within reaper, so I think I can relate.

Command & Search palette. Put it on a hotkey and you get a searchable box for actions, FX, chains & templates. The advantage of this one is that it's an extension and not a script, so it's really fast - pretty much instant.

Envelope Palette: Let's you quickly paint shapes for automation lanes. (I had to install ReaImGui 0.8.1 - hasn't been updated for newer versions.)

Global Sampler: 'Always on' background audio capture for your tracks. Let's you quickly grab past audio and drop it back into Reaper. Great for instant sampling / capturing variations.

Sure, it can control anything that works with Note articulations, or even CCs..
Also creating new Banks is a breeze

Best way I've found to dial in plugins that lack gain compensation (without using another plugin):

Alt-left click on the mix knob to listen to the plugin's delta signal, dial in gain until you find the quietest point, go back to regular signal.

I don't know if this is already pretty common but I set the grid in the piano roll to correspond with numbers 1-10.
So for example: 1 = whole measure, 2 = half measure, 3 = quarter measure and so on.

So when you're doing some editing and you need it to be super precise, just hit 8 and you have a 1/128th note, then hit 2 and you're right back to half measure.

It's true that Reaper can seem overwhelming, but that's only because it can do so much.
Once you get the GUI nicer and figure out a handful of things, you can just forget about the rest, until you run into something you need.
That is how it is working for me... I reached the level of abilities offered that i am aware of in Studio One ...and Cakewalk.
Those are the two I know the best, besides Fl Studio, which is a different beast & great in it's own way, but not "MIDI-compatible".

The main thing is to back up your Reaper as you customize, so a reminder: There is a GREAT backup utility in the main options screen!
I also like using the portable, because I back up the stuff on that drive on a regular basis and separate from my OS backups.
Because it's lightweight I can back up the folder in seconds.

I know I'll take the heat with my answer, but my DAW of choice is Pro Tools. The only reason I use it is because I've been at it since 2007. I really know how to use it. You might claim it is MIDI weak, well, not for me. However, every now and then you learn about AVID's shitty policies, their ways to empty your pocket dry, and their almighty attitude is a bit too much. That's when Reaper shows its head and tries to seduce me. BTW, I'm on version 12.2020. Wasn't going to keep paying.
