i need this to be explained from a Reaper perspective as i still try to understand

    what i understand is this:
its like putting a Realimit on the master and keeping it at 0.....and then just paying less attention to the levels of each track as Realimit will keep squashing if needed any signals above 0?

but how does that help at the end of the session when you take the limitor off? or you don't take it off?

i'm just trying to understand exactly this workflow because Avicii says its easier to work like this

No, he's using the limiter to shape the tracks' dynamics on purpose, not to ignore it.

Of course not. When you push the tracks to a limter with a threshold of 0dB it would clip like hell if you'd turn it off.

.. it does not mean it's better method for everyone. He found it easier to achieve the final level balance and loudness this way.

he says in the video he just pushes them into the limitor. I thought he means he only cares to get the volume right between the instruments but doesn't care much about if he's peaking or not. Dynamics don't change unless the overall volume goes over 0db right? for limitor..

but does that mean he's mastering the track already?....or how would he master if he's already pushing the track to 0db

    I wouldn't. It's just a laziness-"technique".

In principle, there is nothing wrong with mixing into a limiter, but it has some disadvantages. One disadvantage is that your mix will fall apart if you remove the limiter. It becomes part of the sound of your mix. On the other hand, a limiter on the sum can also help to detect problems in the mix. For that, I would activate it, bring down the threshold to check for problems, and then put it back into bypass.

how? doesn't just raising the volume of the playback system does that same thing to hear for problems?

Pushing the tracks into the limiter means exactly this. And that's why it affects the dynamics of the tracks.

    At least partly.

It depends. Do you have large monitors that can move a lot of air without distorting?

BTW Turning up the volume is not the same as inserting a limiter ;) Because when changing the volume level, the fletcher munson component also comes into play.
