So if you have the best freestyling session in your life you can't write it down later?
    Flawless logic. Pure BS

Why are they in the studio recording, shouldn't they come up with the beats on the spot live?

Usually when someone wins a battle contest and then goes on to record a song the song is weak as fuck. There are exceptions but yea

it's going to cost the same per hour wether you show up prepared for the session in advance, or not.
but most of us would also agree you should be able to freestyle if you want to be an mc.

I don't agree with this. Some people's brains aren't wired like that.

I think someone should honestly do a study on how some are able to gather their thoughts in sync and freestyle so well and some can't.

Either way just because you can't doesn't mean you can't write and make great music and sell out shows and records. That's all that matters anyways.

New Yorker here. i've never been called 'corny' in my life thankfully.

i absolutely disagree with Dave East's statement. if an artist can create songs without writing (i.e. Biggie), then cool. there's absolutely nothing wrong with writing songs though. i know some great writers that can't freestyle, and i know some great freestylist that can't write a compelling song. it cuts both ways.

fun fact: i once recorded a 9 track album for an artist i work with. he didn't write any of the songs. he also recorded it in a very short amount of time. it's the best album in his catalog, imo. he's also a hell of a writer. go figure :dunno:

i like Dave East. he's cool. he should have kept this opinion to himself though, but to each their own. maybe it's to get a consensus/spark controversy. gotta keep your name hot in these streets somehow, i guess.

There is no way of telling wether this dude is actually freestyling. We have this thing in Scandinavian countries where the rapper is given a random subject to rap about with no preparation, or even just a random word or sentence. Such as "polar bears" or "slutty mermaid hookers". And every bar has to relate very clearly to this subject. A single thing the rapper says that isn't specifically about this doesn't count.

Would love to see this in the US as it's very difficult to enjoy american freestyle battles. It's like wrestling :/

i'm in the US. i have friends/fellow artists that have been doing those types of freestyles for over 20 years. definitely not a new concept or something that hasn't been done here before. it's not something a lot of artists can do, however. the current freestyle/battle format is more formulaic/commercialized now, so we don't get to see that level of on-the-spot creativity as much nowadays.

Only freestyling would give you the most random lyrics like about smurf who ate a banana and saw an alien who thought he was s squirrel who had nuts for dinner on top of the Orthank while Saruman was taking a break playing mahjong with Lao TseTung while ninjas where attacking the temple of the samurai.

Most rappers successful in freestyle or battle rap can't write songs. That's the other side of the coin! Dude sounds high af anyway, probably a cannabis psychosis in its initial stage.

Weeded Dave East talking about his own personal view. Nothing wrong with that although I find it amusing :D

Have you ever watched Sway In The Morning? They do this whit a lot of mc's. This is one of my favorites:

This one is also sick, especially because he is not known for being a mc:

The next logical step to that line of thinking is if you sing (rap?) the same song twice you're a cheat.
