Robert Selden Duvall (January 5, 1931 in San Diego – February 15, 2026 in Fauquier County, Virginia) was an American actor and director.

He was considered one of the leading American character actors and starred in film classics such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. In 1984, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Love Comes Again.

His wife, Luciana Duvall, shared the news on Facebook on Monday.

“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort,” she wrote.

The statement continued, “To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”

Duvall’s career spanned decades, with memorable roles in “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” “Network,” “The Natural,” and to name just a few.

He won the Best Actor Oscar in 1983 for the film “Tender Mercies,” in which he played a former country music star dealing with alcoholism and grief.

RIP Mr. Duvall.
