The metal world is mourning a pioneering musician: former Morbid Angel drummer Mike Browning has died. The death metal musician was just 62 years old. News of his passing was shared by the record label Profound Lore Records, through which the American had released two full-length albums with his most recent band, Nocturnus AD. No details regarding the cause of death are currently known.

Legend & Godfather

"Rest in peace, death metal legend and godfather of sci-fi death metal: Mike Browning of Nocturnus—and later Nocturnus AD," reads the statement from Profound Lore. "May your journey lead beyond the gate and into the outer void!" Morbid Angel also issued a statement: "Rest in peace, Mike—thank you for helping make all of this possible. Our condolences go out to his family and especially his daughter [born in 2007 – Ed.]."

Browning played drums on the recording that was originally intended to be Morbid Angel's debut album: *Abominations of Desolation*. The group recorded the album back in 1986, though it was not released until 1991. Mike left Morbid Angel in 1987 to form his own band, Nocturnus, initially playing alongside guitarists Vincent Crowley and Gino Marino and bassist Richard Bateman. Their progressive style—featuring sci-fi themes and keyboards—was remarkably forward-looking for the late 1980s.

Browning handled both drums and vocals on *The Key* (1990), while on *Thresholds* (1992), he focused solely on the drums. Furthermore, Mike was involved with the Florida-based death metal bands Incubus and Acheron. In 2008, he released the solo album *Trancemission* via Pharmafabrik Recordings. Most recently, he devoted his time to Nocturnus AD, with whom he released the full-length albums *Paradox* (2019) and *Unicursal* (2024).
