R.I.P. - Cleo Laine (†97, Jazz-Sängerin), 24. Juli 2025

She was one of the few British singers to achieve widespread acclaim in the USA, the homeland of jazz. Cleo Laine has now died, aged 97. This was confirmed by the music centre “The Stables” in the English parish of Wavendon.

It was founded in 2010 by her and her husband, jazz musician John Dankworth. Laine performed internationally, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall. She won a Grammy for “Cleo at Carnegie”. In 1986 she was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the Broadway play “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. In 1997 Laine became the first British jazz artist to be made a dame – the female equivalent of a knight.
