Chip Taylor, born James Wesley Voight (March 21, 1940, Yonkers, New York – March 23, 2026), was an American songwriter.

Taylor was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and thus the uncle of Angelina Jolie and James Haven. After a less than successful attempt at becoming a professional golfer, Chip Taylor launched a career in the music industry. He composed pop and rock songs, either solo or with other composers such as Al Gorgoni, Billy Vera, Ted Daryll, and Jerry Ragavoy. His best-known compositions include "Wild Thing," performed by The Troggs; "Angel of the Morning," written for Merrilee & the Turnabouts (with highly successful cover versions by P. P. Arnold (1968) and Juice Newton (1981)); and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)," which was recorded by Lorraine Ellison and later by Janis Joplin. Other songs include the pop hits... Can’t Let Go by Evie Sands, Make Me Belong to You, I Can Make It With You, Step Out of Your Mind, Country Girl, City Man, and I’ll Hold Out My Hand, as well as the country hits Sweet Dream Woman and Son of a Rotten Gambler.

In the late 1970s, Taylor left the music business and became a professional gambler (blackjack and horse racing). He began releasing albums again in 1996, including Hit Man, on which he reinterpreted old songs (including Wild Thing, Angel of the Morning, and Son of a Rotten Gambler—written for his son Kristian).

He also collaborated with violinist Carrie Rodriguez, with whom he released several albums and performed at the RuhrTriennale in the Century of Song series in the fall of 2005 at the invitation of Bill Frisell.

His 2020 cover version of Regina Spektor's song On the Radio (originally from 2006) is featured on the soundtrack of the Netflix series Sex Education. before.
