    R.I.P. - Anita Guerreiro - 13. November 1936 - † December 7, 2025 - Portuguese singer and actress

Even at the age of seven, she sang at the clubhouse of the Sport Clube do Intendente, a sports club in her hometown of Pena and the neighboring municipality of Anjos (now Arroios).

In 1952, she won a radio singing competition and captivated the audience. Manager Marques Vidal subsequently signed her, withdrew her from the competition, and secured her a contract with the renowned Fado club Café Luso, from then on performing under the stage name Anita Guerreiro.

A multitude of performances followed, garnering rave reviews in the newspapers, particularly from 1954 onward, when she also made her first recordings. In 1955, she received her first engagement at the popular Teatro Maria Vitória. Her first role was a success and marked her entry into the city's popular revues, the Revistas à Portuguesa. Thanks to her captivating and authentic style of performing fados and Lisbon songs, she soon became one of the most popular singers in Lisbon's revues.

In the feature film *The Secret Command Center*, which American actor and director Ray Milland filmed in Lisbon and the surrounding area in 1956 with a star-studded cast, Guerreiro appeared as a fado singer—her first film appearance, which was occasionally followed by others in subsequent years.

She opened a fado bar in the historic theater district of Parque Mayer called Adega da Anita, which she closed after several successful years to move with her husband to the rapidly developing overseas province of Angola. There she won several awards, including the first edition of the Festival da Canção de Luanda, the Angolan branch of the popular Festival da Canção in Portugal.

After about three years in Angola, she returned to Lisbon, where she resumed her earlier successes in revue theater, particularly at the Teatro Variedades and the Teatro Capitólio, both located in Parque Mayer. In the early 1970s, Guerreiro withdrew from revue performances and began singing Fado, performing in Fado venues and on recordings, but primarily on international tours in Europe and North America, especially for the Portuguese community in Canada and the USA in the late 1980s. With an engagement at the Teatro Variedades in 1982, she briefly returned to revue performances, though not as frequently as before.
In the 1990s, she turned her attention more fully to television, appearing not only as a singer but also as an actress in telenovelas and television series.

Following an initial honor in 2001, an evening celebrating her 50th stage anniversary as a professional singer was held on February 17, 2004. Artists such as António Calvário, António Rocha, Fernanda Baptista, Marina Mota, and the actress Natalina José performed at the venerable Teatro São Luiz. In November 2004, she received the Gold Medal of Merit from the city of Lisbon. Since then, she has also been honored with a series of "best of" compilations, featuring both her fados and her revue songs.
