I'd traveled back through time to 1937, and after scouring up and down the east coast of the United States for three weeks looking for Martin guitar dealers, was able to procure 84 old growth Brazilian Rosewood backed, Adirondack topped D-28/41 guitars for approximately $189 each. I then jumped to 1955 and bought out every pack of Topps baseball cards from every store I could find in NYC in the 5 hours (the jump window becomes shorter the closer to your time of origin but isn't like it is mathematically feasible to be exact) I was able to gather in my haul 68 Roberto Clemente rookie cards, 59 Willie May's, 63 Hank Aarons and of course lots of others, Ted Williams, Sandy Kaufax and the like.

I've been selling my collection off one by one. My daughter can go to university, my wife drives a Mercedes Benz and I just bought a new pair of sneakers.

    jokes aside....
hardware takes space, storage space costs money,
you never know how prices change 20 years from now,
risk no insurance or waste money on it,
although musical instruments are usually good investments, I'm not an expert to tell if there aren't better commodities with better "return" value, you'd definitely want to diversify the stash (not relying on one device type, one manufacturer etc..),
maybe consider short term quick buy-sell thing, accumulating money over time, not wait 20 years, you find a good deal on audio gear, then sell it at right time later locally, for ex. I did that with my older RME Fireface 802 even before the chip shortage fully kicked in,

between my vasectomy and total abstinence due to not being able to form even functional PLATONIC relationships having kids is one thing at least I don't have to worry about. the last time I had a hug was April 2020 lol- which is for the best, I can't even keep a spider plant alive. personality disorders- I dont recommend them, not good times but at least I can stop the genetics from being passed on!

one more thought regarding investment- depending on what you or your wife do for a living and your life situation- have you considered taking the money you have and investing it into one of yourselves? you have like what, 16 years to save for your daughters college? if one of you two go back to a trade school or college or whatever, learn a new trade/career/degree in 2-4 years you now have 12 years to save for daughters college but with more income (assuming you don't go into debt going back to school yourself. but community colleges, trade schools, those IT/coding places that allow you pay back once you get a job- those might be worth investigating). this has the added potential benefit of improving the QoL of your family for decades to come as well. it probably WOULD add more stress in the short term, but knowing that the payoff will be with it makes it less of a bitter pill IMO.

maybe something to think about depending on your situation. just don't go to 4 years of school for like something cool but ultimately not in demand (underwater basket weaving degree)

also another thing is, maybe set some limits for yourself. keep an eye out on Craigslist or eBay (maybe with a bot or something? is that even a thing) for those screaming stupidly good "I found this old 'jupiter' in my dad's basement and just want it gone" rare type deals. obviously the less you spend the higher the profit potential and minimal loss protection. I mean that's not rocket surgery of course, but with the long game it's worth reminding yourself about. I know I get the "oh God I need to buy this now so I get a deal" and sometimes that screws me compared to being more patient.

Write a book about "How to get wealthy to pay the best colleges for the kids".

Or: Leave the U., S. & A. and live in a civilized country with free schools and universities and universal health care.

I think guitars or maybe other instruments (like violins, brass, pianos ect) are more safe than electronic hardware stuff, because cheaper clones in the future, or if your hardware breaks and needs to get repaired with expensive vintage repair parts, maybe you can't even get those parts 10 years in the future... Who knows?

No, FrankWhite23, I'm not trolling you though it is not something that has actually happened, I just made up a small story, a fantasy that might or might not be possible. I'm a fantastic surrealist.

In Germany and many western europe countries colleges are free, I think. It should be in every first world country, but some are kinda weird about education....

As some have pointed out, we can't predict the value of anything a year or two in the future, much less 16 years. There might be brain-implantable musical instruments in 16 years, so no one will need any external gear at all. But there are investments that are nearly guaranteed to rise in 16 years - stocks and real estate. Look at an historical chart of the stock market. There are many dips along the way to inexorably increasing prices. Over time, this never fails. If you don't know how to figure out which stocks to buy, just buy index funds and don't worry - ticker symbols like SPY, DIA and QQQ. The stock market in the US has dropped a lot over the past year or so, and probably will bottom sometime in the next few months. So there will soon be a great buying opportunity. Then just don't lose your nerve during the inevitable dips, as it always comes back.
