I need a new VPN provider. Search results were old and all over the place, so here I am.

Proton Free works, but is so slow to connect, limited in servers and doesn't allow p2p torrents etc., among other things. The Plus version isn't cheap, so im wondering if its worth it or not? On paper it looks AMAZING, but then most of them do. Or whats better these days? I travel internationally a lot so having IP location selection is super important for banking reasons, otherwise accounts get frozen locked and all that fun stuff.

    Thanks!

I use NordVPN for several years now. I am quite satisfied. Not cheap, but I only use their special offers to renew my subscription.
I am quite pleased with the download speed: it is hardly less then my regular download speed. You can choose a certain country but also a dedicated P2P connection for torrents.
Also, NordVPN is available under Linux which was an extra advantage for me to keep using when changing from windows to Linux.
And my experience with their helpdesk is great. There was a problem for the Linux version which they fixed in a special update.
So, until I find an even better VPN service, I'll stick to NordVPN.

Another Nord user here, it has the features I need from a VPN provider
    • Fast
    • Application kill switch if the VPN drops (or I terminate the VPN)
    • Double VPN
    • Control over which country I want to tunnel through
    • Onion over VPN
    • Split tunneling
    • Cheap (when there is a good offer)
    • Custom DNS
    • Appear invisible on LAN
    • Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android compatible
I don't use Nordpass though, I prefer 1password with Yubikey

Proton VPN is absolutely amazing, although not as private as Mullvad or IVPN, it is still a reference regarding security. I have no problem with speeds thanks to the Wireguard protocol. Nord VPN is not trustworthy regarding anonimity.

Would you mind explaining this? I am quite curious?

I hear this quite a bit, usually people are referring to the 2018 breach where a few logs were scraped.

One fundamental difference between Proton and Nord is that Nord services only run in RAM server side, which means they are diskless whereas Proton is disk-based

All VPN Providers u mentioned are ristricting their access by max 5 Users / devices per Account. What means, their using some kind of logging, which checks, on how many devices you are logged in. And another big point ist, that a lot of those big VPN-Providers only rent their hardware, so they dont own it and dont have the "FULL" controll about their systems.

And here is an article about Proton ... https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/busine...-tarnishes-swiss-privacy-reputation-/46952640
i would not recomend this service either.

But i can recommend perfect-privacy. Its actually one of the more expensive VPN-Service, but its worth, every single cent :)

i use windscribe, €3 a month for 3 locations and 40gb of data, another €1 for unlimited
they have a linux client too which is nice, they claim no-logs and seem legit

i think €11 a month is unlimited everything, including antarctica as a location, apparently

    * i think the amount of devices you can use is limited, i only have 3 and it works fine
also they give you a randomised username, remember it!

I will have to disagree here, VPN providers use a reverse proxy which can restrict the number of connections by IP with no logging involved. This is a standard feature of a reverse proxy

    Code:
    https://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_limit_conn_module.html

Reverse proxy? I think you're mistaken here.

Reverse proxy is running several servers behind one endpoint. Somewhat related to load balancing. So it's for people running a web service basically, without going into details too much.

Limiting VPN connections is done by checking user credentials. So they keep a list of currently active sessions and compare against that.

This is what Mullvad says, for instance:

If "logs were scraped" then RAM based servers means nothing. There should be no logs in existence to scrape.

Thanks for the tips guys. Apparently NordVPN (and many others) doesn't work in China, which is one place I will be going throughout the summer :dunno:

You'll be hard pressed to find anything that works from china. However this may be of interest...

A couple of years back I set up Tor Browser with a certain configuration for a friend who had a work stint in China. It did work but it was only good for casual web stuff because of slowness. Might be worth a shot.

I found a VPN solution for China from some DJ friends there, apparently it works flawlessly, but haven't tried it so cant recommend yet. Will soon find out!

I just hate NordVPN. I get the ads constantly, and the salesgas is just totally out of proportion. 70% off, 80% off, 90% off, literally all the salestricks are being pulled. Countdowns and timers (sometimes from as little as 10 minutes), limited time offers and pretty much every single FOMO you can think of. They've got fucking pewdipie on their frontpage.

For a more decent company, with (in my personal opinion) a better VPN overall as an added bonus, I would like to suggest Mullvad.

Dunno about surfshark but Nord is to be avoided at all costs. Nord's unpublished log collection policy is b.s. and they should be drummed out of business for their antics with law enforcement. Collecting logs at all is a RED FLAG for a vpn - if you can't trust them they dont deserve your $$$...

As far as unlimited devices go, running your VPN on your site wide router (which means your vpn is always on and everything runs thru it) gives anyone the ability to have unlimited devices... It's not really a feature per se...

Before choosing ANY vpn, do the research and make certain they are running their servers in RAM only and NO logs are ever collected or kept.
