As I said earlier, Pono was born because of the lack of HD formats in the legal platforms, mainly iTunes at this time. Neil Young haven't invented a new format, in fact he haven't invented anything, and didn't tried to reinvent the wheel. He just said that in 2014 the quality proposed on the legal platforms was generally crappy... and he was right!

Of course Pono was not exactly the only one online vendor proposing this format, it was the only one that proposed only HD format, so that general people who was not aware of the difference have only the best - lossless - quality.

In 2014, Apple was still stuck with the shitty *.ma4 aac 256kbs format, but after Pono was created, guess what... they started progressively to propose ALAC (lossless) format, for the same price as the lossy format!!!

So, Neil Young have WON: now there is NO legal vendor / streaming platform on the market that doesn't propose to you HD lossless formats, so that legal buyers / streamers can now enjoy the best quality available.

 

A pill warms you up for a night, but analogue will warm you for life.

 

I agree with your thing except one detail: I'd be hard pressed to call 256kbs AAC a "shitty format". Going with ALAC instead of FLAC is a very Apple thing to do though.

Just compare your own mix(es), mastered (bounced) in 256kbps and the same mastered in lossless... I'm old, but I do hear the difference.

Hmm okay I didn't insult Neil Young, I just made a comment on a financial venture he was involved in. Pono just took the free FLAC format and did a marketing exercise on it - and failed. On the other hand, you're insulting me by telling me I can't read. Peace to you.
