A simple question. I didn't add another choice to the answers to choose from because randomness is very diverse and comprises lots of methods and sub-methods. In my definition, any method that is not 100% definitive is random.

Please poll and elaborate if you want. It would be helpful for the future works.

I feel like I always make music randomly until music gods bless me with some direction , it doesnt happen alot but when it happens its magical , things just fall in place and I feel like I hear the song and know every move I must do , the song just finishes itself and lyrics come out on its own , I feel like all the training and learning I do is to prepare me for this situation

In the early 80's I used to connect a Roland MC-202 Microcomposer, an SH-101, a JX-3P, and Sequential Circuits Pro 1 with different onboard sequences with different lengths to randomly generate some really incredible music.
Steve Reich and Karlheinz Stockhausen inspired me.

  8. Then it would seem you do not believe in the use of metaphors either. If you do not allow leeway for acts of unforeseen inspiration, you will make dull music.

I do. I do stuff like blindfold myself and slap the keyboard with my dick. Or, throw the cat at it. Sometimes it works good; just depends.

    Absolutely spot on.

Yup, i can't shake the feeling that @Nought's tortured relationship with his muse stems directly from this inability to actually embrace the messy business of meaningful creation. For him it seems you've got to write a 20,000 word thesis first and be given a certificate before legitimate inspiration is possible.

The exquisite beauty of the natural world stems not from perfection itself but through its perfectly unique chaotic expression. Writing emotionally satisfying, living music will always elude @Nought or indeed anyone who clings to moribund rules and highbrow, conceptual dogma.

...of course this works too. A generous application of bubble wrap will dramatically reduce vet fees and improve moggie longevity btw... :guru:

  11. The funny rating was for the latter part. The bubble wrapped moggie imagery is hilarious. The first part is quite inspiring considering the difficulty in describing music with such cumbersome tools as words.

  14. I saw a 1st Edition signed set of cards on ebay with a starting price of $10,000. I was tormented for 5 seconds at which point I realised I don't have $10,000. That particular dilemma was resolved.

    1. This is a typical FOSTER question (hello back if you are!)
    2. Philosophers discuss whether our world is predetermined or random.
If something appears to be "randomly", isn't it only because the observer had too little information to predict the result?
Or is there something "absolutely" random out there, an effect without any cause? :dunno:
    3. I think: It's always a mix of the two, at least in our daily life.
So you can make music (or whatever), neither entirely by accident, nor completely predetermined.

According to your definition, practically EVERYTHING happens randomly.

I don't foster that the op is sincere in asking such a question without answering it first himself. Without doing so he exerts a sense of conTROLL over the madness that I expect him to revel in. History tends to repeat itself, and unknowing fish suffer the bait, their fate...just wait for the spate.

Sometimes great things can only happen by giving up control.
Only without the coercion by the artist there is space left for the immeasurable creativity of nature.
