ok so i was having trouble with my firewire interface dropping out on me and the hardware not being detected. so i gave up on it after troubleshooting for weeks and i went out to get a usb interface.

got the interface home and my pc says usb device not recognized. switched out cables installed and reinstalled drivers, still no luck. so i take the usb interface to my cousins house and it works perfect on his laptop no issues at all.

so now it seems that my pc just doesn't want audio devices connected to it...

does anyone know a work around to this. ive been out of commission for about a month now!

    specs

    MSi z97 gaming 5 mobo
    i7 intel 4770k cpu @3.5 ghz
    32 gb ram
    windows 10 pro
    64bit

Perhaps it's a driver problem. I've had similar problems and it usually is. When your device is connected I would try looking in the device manager and then uninstalling whatever the current driver is for that device. Then unplug and plug in your device again. It should search for a driver and choose one to install, however Windows doesn't always choose the right one.

If it still isn't working then you need to point exactly to the driver you want to use. I'm on Windows 7 so I'm not sure how to do it for 10, but for me in the device manager right click and choose properties. In the General tab choose Update Driver and then "Browse my computer for driver software." Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer." Select "Show All Devices" and then click Next. And finally choose "Have Disk" and browse to the exact driver for your device. I hope this works.

try your device manager, look under USB > uninstall all the broken connection things, scan for hardware changes and see if that works

Since it's not the driver could it be the USB port itself?
Those onboard cards can sometimes go bad.Even the front panel ones you insert yourself.
If it's a desktop, open it up and check the connections as well.

Have you tried updating the drivers from inside Device Manager?
If there are no updates try this:
Disconnect all your USB devices and in the Device Manager look for the USB Root Hubs. Uninstall these.
Restart your computer and they will reinstall themselves.
Plug in your USB device after the root hubs have reinstalled.

Do the USB ports work with something else plugged into them? Like a thumb drive for example.
    ^^disregard, i just read your above post^^

Maybe it's the motherboard itself, if firewire is also having issues. Or perhaps, if your PSU is not large enough -or is dying- it might not be sending enough power to your peripheral devices. Of course that depends on how many hard drives and devices are plugged in.

if at least one USB port works you can buy an extender USB port thing. I did for a laptop, so turned one usb port into 4 ports, and it's only like 10-12 bucks

Try changing your power profile to High Performance and in Device Manager right-click each Root Hub go to Properties and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.

If i missed what kind of usb device (soundcard) you wanna install im sorry.. BUT, i struggled the same way as you did after my yearly new installment of my system (yeah i know, its so stupid)..

Thing is MSi motherboards demands updated drivers from pretty much everything. In my case on Win7 i just didnt get it to work until i had every update installed from microsoft since i took new drivers for RME Fireface 802 cards. SO, i would check the updates on your system AND latest drivers for your motherboard and USB ports etc, to get get back on track. Ofc if you can find older drivers for your soundcard that could work aswell.. I was just very lucky to have a RME card since their support is just shining as usual. Without it i would have thrown the maching and everything down in the pool..

Good luck and hope you get it to work..

What is your device being called in the Device Manager when it's connected? Is there a little yellow exclamation point next to it? Is there any additional information given when you look at its properties? Look through all of the tabs and properties and maybe you could find something like an error code that you could then look up.

If all else fails, just back up your ish, re-format and reinstall Windows. I usually do this twice a year anyways just to get rid of all the junk in my system that I don't need anymore. I couldn't have lasted a month without making music. I would've done that a long time ago.

Could be something in your BIOS like Usb Legacy Disabled, or not enough power on your usb port, do you have the option of plugging in a power cord to your usb audio device also? I have a SAffire Pro 14 Firewire Audio and I have to power it on first before booting my pc, otherwise it will not work, took me days to realize what the heck was going on, and my pc wasn't supplyin enough juice to run, so yeh may also check your power supply make sure you have a big enough one, such as 500 wt or better Good Luck

Just in case anyone has similar problems (and a working interface of course), these can also result from having installed too many USB drivers in the past.
The Windows registry will contain (too) many "UpperFilter" and "LowerFilter" entries that may cause all kinds of issues that can be resolved by deleting some of them.
Here's some info about how to do this.
