Picked up two patchbays one is balanced and the other is unbalanced. they are both 48p. i have several sound modules, external compressors, and synths. my main goal is to find the best way to run all my sound modules and synths into my patch bays. i have them all connected midi wise meaning that one keyboard controls all of them. i just want to have all my outputs ganged to my patchbays to create multitimberal shit . i have been able to do that with the roland octa but i need more than 10 ins and outs. so what up people help ya boy out...! thanks in advance. :grooves:

    @ Hoodhendrix,

The only advice that I can give you right now is to read the following Article with attention, maybe you'll find a solution, or at least, several useful info about 'Patchbays' :

The first thing to answer is
    What interfaces do You use?
Remenbering that midi modules are ussualy unbalanced but using an unbalanced cable to hook in a balanced interface its not the right way

    @ Ovalf,

Yes, but certainly not all of them ! *no*

I own an 'E-MU Proteus 2000', and I can testify you that the 'Main' Outputs, as well as the 'Sub' Outputs are 'Balanced'. And this is the case with most of the 'E-MU' Modules of that 'Series' (Mo-Phatt, Xtreme Lead, Virtuoso,... ).
Of course, by 'Balanced', I mean that the Output is of '+4dB' ('Professional' Standard) versus the 'Unbalanced' Output of '-10dB'.

    What's your problem?
You simply connect all ins and outs to the rear jacks of the patchbays and start patching the front jacks. Balanced to balanced, unbalanced to either balanced or unbalanced.
Make sure you configure your patchbays appropriately, ofthen they have configuration switches so time to read the manuals.
I assume you have a mixer where you can finally sum up everything???

i got caught up in the day sorry i wasnt able to get back with you guys as quickly. i appreciate all of your responses. ok lets cut to the chase. i have an ass load of balanced patch cables you can use balanced patch cables with both. these patch bays are trs/tt sockets. the thing i cant get my head around is the setting , full normal , half normal etc. i was wondering if anyone has patchbays and could share how they have theirs setup. i want to be able to run all my sound through the back and patch them or chain them or patch them to each other so in the end i can have a multi timbral out put in the end. Im doing all my summing through my Universal Audio 2192 master interface. i bought patchbays there is no need for a mixer.and as far as the comment about reason i have been using external tube compressors as inserts in reason for years. but in reason you are also limited. i have racks my good friends. some of us that use external hardware know what im talking about. so if anyone have some advice in routing ideas i would sure appreciate it. thanks for all the responses :mates:

Honestly, may I suggest that you haven't fully understood what a patch bay can do for you?
If what you thought is patching multiple outputs into two channels and that's your way of summing up audio signals. then forget about it.
Indeed, in theory what you think of should work but the problem is that today's equipment has quite different output filtering, line configuration and output impedances.
And even if all were the same, you'd force all output amp stages to work against each other which could, in the worst case, even destroy the output stages of your equipment.

Fact is that all rack devices and synths have low-impedance outputs made to drive high-impedance inputs. Only a mixer can do that.
You could go the one-device-at-a-time route but then you have no multitimbrality.

    So true
Nevertheless I simply cannot completely get rid of my hardware gear.
It's certainly an emotional thing - just like music is. :grooves:
