Overloud has announced the release of Tapedesk, a new audio effect plugin in the Gems series, dedicated to mixing and mastering. Tapedesk combines a tape machine and multiple console models into a single plugin, to replicate the warm tones of an analog mixing workflow.

In the real world, a tape machine is always physically connected to a console. The sound enters into the console’s preamplifier, gets fed into the tape machine and is recorded to tape. From there the tape is played back and the audio again hits the console for mixing into its stereo bus.

Tapedesk is the ultimate tool for professional engineers who mix with no compromises.

    Tapedesk features

    • Simulation of 3 legendary analog consoles.
    • Simulation of a 2 inch 24-track tape machine.
    • Faithful interactions between the console and the tape machine.
    • Precise metering in any point of the sound chain.
    • Simulation of all transformers in the original units.
    • Very low CPU usage: all your tracks can have one.
    • Lots of presets designed in real mixing sessions.

Tapedesk is available for Windows and Mac (VST/AU/AAX/Standalone).

    Price: 129,00 €/USD until May 14th, 2017 (Regular 199 €/USD).

Thats what we talked about in the "free tape service thread". And here is just the answer to it by emulating the whole workflow from console to tape and back. By the way, it sounds really nice on that final mix. So i have to agree. Its impressive.

Looks promising. It remains to be seen how it compares to Waves and Slate offering, among others.

FYI, console emulation part in Tapedesk is based on Console Emulator in Sonar (Which also written by Overloud).
Tape machine part in Tapedesk is newly developed but Sonar also have Tape machine emulation which written by Overloud too.

I don't have time to try it yet.
Does anyone think it's worth buying?

Why? I just found it surprizingly objective and antiseptic. Its short. Straight to the point. Just facts. No fairy stories.

Thats how i like it. (But I'am German, maybe thats the reason.) :winker:

CPU usage: 90% GUI 10% useful code. Same with the size of its DLL, I can bet. And the CPU usage is low... hmmm I'm going to stick with ReelBus that actually uses CPU for sound processing.

Nice looking tape though. It even spins like Waves one. But I'm kinda not paying graphic designers.

In other words I wasn't really impressed by the sound nor the presenter. It does sound interesting and good, but not really like tape. ReelBus sounds closer to tape IMO.

Wouldnt it be cool if you had to replace the tape and align the heads and stuff, like a tomagochi plugin and if you fucked up your whole mix would be destroyed? Lots of money in it.

On a little more serious note: don't give those "marketing experts" ideas. We might get it soon how things are *looking*.

(It surely was better than a Slate video presentation :P )
I was hoping for a broader presentation of the plugin applied to different instruments and genres of music. We got to hear how the plugin sounds when applied to a full mix and a drum buss in a very specific genre (generic radiophonic rock?). But I guess that's why we have the option to demo the plug (?) All in all, still interested in trying it :))

It will also include the Godzilla mode. Not satisfied with your mix? Burn it down.

You should use Reaper because its very efficient especially with Plugin GUIs sucking to much CPU. But i have to disagree with you. For me it sounded pretty cool. And as i mentioned in the other thread i would use such a thing for buses to get rid of that digital noizy character most synths, guitars and drums have. Not only for Master. How good it really is can only be analysed by a blind comparison. And even that would be a score of personal taste. I have no idea how ReelBus sounds like. But i know how real 8 track tape sounds like and i never heard any digital simulation wich nailed it perfectly. (Because the cables, the analog hardware etc. we already talked about it.)

Believe me, i don't give a shit about its gui. I always use Alt Gr + M to quick darken my screen if i'am listening to things. So i hope that wasn't an insinuation to me only falling for bling bling. Just the fact that i'am using Reaper speaks for itself. The intern plugins have no special GUI at all. And i use them all the time.

So it would be a cool idea to make once a blind test here with all available tape simulation plugins under same conditions or similar plugin adjustments.

    Okay. Just found this:

So i have to agree that ReelBus sounds pretty amazing. The butter like contour fits nice into my real tape memories. Maybe its a little bit more bassy than the other ones. But you can clearly hear how the example soundloops stick down in the stereo field at the moment the tape simulation starts. Very nice.
