How many times has it happened that you`ve really forced yourself to continue mixing and butchering a mix, when your ears could not take it any more?
Or being really tired and not feeling to do any work yet you somehow click the daw icon and start dropping bombs on a mix that is going really well so far.
And then you start losing your patience doubting yourself..."i should have done it differently","wtf, sounds like crap...." and then you say fuck it,discard all the changes, close the daw and go to sleep...
And the next morning your fire up your daw with fresh ears....."sounds really good"...

  3. I would always prefer another to mix mostly anything that I compose for I will butcher it no matter if my ears are fresh or I am 18 hours knee deep and drenched to the bone in a session. It is as if I become oblivious to the separation of frequencies. It doesn't happen all the time, but frequently, and has always has been that way. Also in many instances, my right ear becomes excruciatingly painful after a few hours of critical listening. My ability to hear isn't impaired, it just becomes painful enough that I cannot even wear headphones. No doctor ever came up with a good explanation of why this happens, although when I was about 23 a dickhead threw a firecracker that went kaboom a few feet from my ear, and that was when this began. None of this bothers my sense or ability to sing, play or write however, and for me, that is my main concern. If that would to happen Keith Emerson and I would be a jamming in his new studio (I as drama queen).

I get what you are saying.Being a composer, recording artist and the engineer can be very tiresome.
One reason is you hear the song a lot more often than just by being an engineer which is not good because you loose objectivity.
You might try to take Glutamine(amino acid) to heal your inner ear.I have helped many with serious health issues to heal their problems.
