Ok, @BEAT16 & @clone...I luckily have some of a relatives rack units that I have been able to borrow...(see photos)

    what do we think?

I reckon that as for the gap at the top between the last unit and the shelf I will have to thicken the underside of the shelf up by cutting a 5mm (ish) board down...I tried some in, yes there will still be a gab there but it won't be as visible.

As for the width of the gap...what do you think? My relative seems to think that it will be ok, once the rack strip is in...thoughts?

    Thanks

    19-inch rack = 48.26 centimeters

50,00 - 48,26 = 1,74 cm Wood left and right so that it looks symmetrical.
1,74 :2 (Left & Right) = 0,87 cm should the wood be thick - lubricating gel paper / sanding to the desired thickness.

Keep in mind that the rails are 1 - 2 millimeters thick.

Maybe try screwing the rails onto the wood and then fit them and then put a 19 rack in
to see if that fits, if something is missing you can also put thin cardboard in between.

Yeah, I am just sourcing the strips etc now. My plan is to have (in each bay) 2 x 1u blanking plate and a 1u blanking plate with brushes so I can route my cables etc.

are you going to cut a hole behind where you are racking them, so they bolt in at the angle of the wood?

How deep is the unit you are going to be installing? The back end will hit the desk surface if you bolt in something that goes too far back into the desk. something to keep in mind. you don't want it hanging downward/backwards off the rails either, or that will add stress.

Yes that's right, you still have to add the diameter of the rack mount maybe 1.2 mm.
So test before you screw it together, if it is too thick you have to sand the wood.

if you use the Adam Hall rail, the opposite direction as shown, you can bolt the brush plate into the square holes using m6 cage nuts. This is like the Home Depot roadside olympics. You don't need a micrometer to figure this out :)

All 19 racks are standardized. I was referring in general, however, nowhere does it say how thick the material is.

Not great I know. Gear4Music do brush plates, and they specify the thickness. The Adam Hall brush plate they have is 1.5mm
