    Hi everyone,

I’m having a strange issue with Omnisphere inside my DAW (Cakewalk Sonar).
When I load a new track with Omnisphere, Windows Explorer (or the last active app) briefly jumps to the foreground during plugin initialization.
The standalone version works fine — this only happens with the VST inside the DAW.

The issue appeared after installing v2.8.7 (josenacha).
Previous R2R releases never had this problem.
I also tried installing the newer v3 release, but the issue persists.

    Has anyone already faced this?
Do you know how to fix this focus/jumping window problem?

    Thanks.

Windows 11, GeForce RTX 3060, Cakewalk Sonar, Cakewalk by BandLab (All up to date)

Which version of Windows are you using? Do you have a graphics card? Which exact version of Cakewalk Sonar do you have installed? I have Windows 11 and Omnisphere 3 is displayed correctly; this is the version I have installed.

Hey, thanks for taking the time.
I updated the main post with the info you asked for.

Just to clarify: the issue started over a year ago with v2.8.7 by Josenacha, and it’s been the same regardless of the Cakewalk or Windows version since then.
Everything was working fine on v2.8.5 by R2R. Something in the Josenacha build messed it up.
Applying the later v2.8.7 R2R release didn’t fix it, same for the newer v3 build.

I did a full cleanup (registry, ProgramData, AppData/Roaming, Common Files, etc.).
    Still getting the same behavior.

That’s an interesting (and admittedly annoying) issue — Omnisphere popping another window like Windows Explorer to the foreground during initialization in Cakewalk Sonar is not typical behavior. Let’s go through what’s likely happening and how to fix or work around it.

    What’s Happening
This “focus steal” is usually caused by the Omnisphere VST calling a Windows API function that briefly grabs focus (e.g., initializing the Spectrasonics STEAM engine), and Sonar doesn’t suppress or handle that focus event properly. In standalone mode, Omnisphere launches in its own process, so the issue doesn’t appear.

    This can occur when:

    • The plugin runs in a separate process or sandbox.

    • The DAW momentarily loses focus during VST initialization.

    • Certain GPU/graphics drivers or shell extensions (like Windows Explorer preview handlers) cause Windows to switch focus when new windows are spawned.
    ✅ Things to Try
    1. Run Cakewalk as Administrator
Sometimes VSTs that run elevated can cause focus issues if the host is not elevated.

    • Right-click Cakewalk → Run as administrator.

    • Then load Omnisphere again.
    2. Try Different Plugin Formats
Omnisphere provides VST2 and VST3 versions.

    • In Sonar, try loading the VST3 version instead of VST2 (or vice versa).
      • You can see this in Cakewalk’s plugin browser (the file paths differ: Vstplugins\Omnisphere.dll vs Common Files\VST3\Omnisphere.vst3).
    • Some users report VST3 handles focus and threading more gracefully.
    3. Change Plugin Load Behavior
    In Sonar:

    • Go to Preferences → File → VST Settings.

    • Try toggling:
      • Enable Plugin Load Balancing

      • Load Plugins in Separate Process

      • Always Suspend Unused Plugins
    • Restart the DAW between tests.
Sometimes the “separate process” option causes window focus to jump when a plugin GUI initializes.
    4. Disable “Bring App to Front” in Windows Settings
Windows 10/11 have a registry flag for foreground lock timeout:

    • Run regedit.

    • Go to:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

    • Find the key ForegroundLockTimeout.

    • Set it to 0x30d40 (200000) (default) or 0 to disable focus stealing entirely.

    • Reboot afterwards.
(Changing this can prevent any app from stealing focus from another — a bit of a blunt fix, but effective.)

    5. Check GPU/Driver Interference
Omnisphere uses OpenGL for its GUI rendering. Sometimes a driver or overlay (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Nahimic, Sonic Studio, etc.) causes a desktop re-focus.

    • Try disabling overlays or “In-Game Overlay” features temporarily.
    6. Test with Another DAW
If you can, load Omnisphere in another DAW (e.g., Reaper, Studio One, or even Cakewalk’s demo project).

    • If it only happens in Sonar → focus handling bug in Sonar.

    • If it happens elsewhere → issue with Omnisphere’s GUI init on your system.
    Summary

    Possible Cause
    Fix / Setting
Plugin format mismatch Try VST3 instead of VST2
Focus not handled by host Adjust VST settings or Windows ForegroundLockTimeout
Elevated privileges mismatch Run both as Admin
Separate process focus Disable “Load plugins in separate process”
Graphics overlay interference Disable GPU overlays
    If you tell me:

    • Your Windows version (10 or 11)

    • Whether you’re using Omnisphere VST2 or VST3

    • And whether you’ve enabled “Load Plugins in Separate Process”
…I can give you a more precise next step.

Would you like me to walk you through which Cakewalk setting to toggle first (and in what order) to test this cleanly?

Since my Cakewalk Sonar accepts everything—meaning it always works, and it even identifies problematic plugins—I assume your problem is Windows-related. If the issue were with the crackers, your problem would have been known long ago.

Take a look at your "Autostart" settings to see what's running, and disable any autostart entries and programs you don't need.

In reality, Windows 11 works perfectly and without problems once you have configured it correctly.

    Run System File Checker
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command, and press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...em-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e

If you're using ASIO drivers (e.g., via your audio interface), ensure exclusive mode is off in the driver panel—sometimes it conflicts with plugin init.

    Windows 11 Focus-Stealing Prevention
This sounds like classic "focus stealing" where background processes (possibly Omnisphere's library scan) trigger Explorer. Here's a reliable registry tweak to raise the timeout before apps can steal focus (backup your registry first via File > Export in Regedit):

    1. Press Win+R > type regedit > Enter.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.
    3. Find ForegroundLockTimeout (DWORD). Double-click it > Set Base to Decimal > Value to 200000 (or higher, like 300000 for 5 minutes). If it doesn't exist, right-click > New > DWORD (32-bit) > Name it, set to 200000 decimal.
    4. Restart your PC and test.
This prevents quick focus grabs without breaking functionality. For a no-edit alternative, install Microsoft PowerToys (free from Microsoft Store) > Enable "Always on Top" module (Win+Ctrl+T to pin Cakewalk during loads).

    Other Potential Culprits
    • Antivirus/File Guard: Exclude your Omnisphere install folder (usually C:\Program Files\Common Files\Spectrasonics) and Cakewalk project folders from real-time scans. Tools like Windows Defender or third-party AV can interrupt disk reads during init, flashing Explorer.
    • GPU/Driver Angle: With your RTX 3060, update NVIDIA drivers via GeForce Experience (clean install option). Omnisphere's UI is graphics-heavy; a hiccup could trigger a refocus. Disable "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" in Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings if enabled.
    • Test Isolation: Create a blank project > Insert only Omnisphere (no other plugins/effects). If it persists, try VST2.x version of Omnisphere (rescan in Edit > Preferences > File > VST Settings). Also, test in another DAW like Reaper (free trial) to isolate if it's Cakewalk-specific.
If none of this nails it, this might be a fresh Omnisphere 3 bug (it's only been out a few weeks). Post details on the Cakewalk forums (discuss.cakewalk.com) or Spectrasonics support (spectrasonics.net/support)—mention your exact versions and the Explorer jump. They've been responsive to Win11 quirks before.

Let me know how these go or if you have logs/error messages—happy to dig deeper!
