All the crypto nerds should invest in this thing instead cuz it's already a classic
whether volca sample will get the same hype, maybe, but this thing right here will certainly be sought after in decades following

I had the CS6R for a few years before I upgraded to the Motif. Those old yamaha workstations are so undervalued. Absolute goldmines for sounds with real character that is missing in 99% of what comes out these days IMO.

s900 or s-950. s2000 is like $300, not $1000ish. If some wants the Akai rack sampler drum sound, they will want an s1000 or 900. Otherwise, the models after s1000 are not as sought after because they are slow, but do not necessarily have the benefit of SCSI transfer. So they are cheap again, until at least the 3000. Some have SCSI cards installed if you find one, but it was an upgrade card for some of them. Of course, they are much harder to find than the samplers themselves.

For professional use (splicing) they were used strictly in a lying position and always in couple
All the accessories were essential: flanges, NAB adapters, blank magnetic tape, leader tape, white pencils and adhesive tape (the cutter is built into the machine), cotton swab and alcohol for cleaning the heads.

When splicing, the diligent sound engineer used baby powder for hands (to avoid greasing tape with fingertips). During the wild editing sessions, the floor was filled with spaghetti of wasted tape and every now and then you had to get rid of it otherwise it became impossible to walk around in the studio.
Was tape splicing masochism? YES, but it was also the only way to edit audio, no one would think of doing it nowadays and remembering it is still moving

I cut albums on a 2480 up until about 4 years ago! Bob Katz told me to never tell anyone what we were using. It was our secret sound.

there were not joking around when they came out with the 2480. we were using a 1680 before that and it was really nice to record to also. mmc, mtc for sync, spdif, optical. nice machines, but they had some issues with fragmentation of the hdd that was annoying at best. and that sh*t would never happen until the hdd was half full or more, of course. I'm not certain if it was caused by people moving them around. they sold hard cases with them, and they were meant to be somewhat "mobile". why did you stop using it, for better convertors?

another odd little va synth. Nova laptop:

Roland SP808-EX - This was my intro into music production. I owned this before I even owned a computer and remember thinking "This is all I will ever need to make music". Fast forward several Zip Disk failures and an introduction to Sonic Foundry's Acid, and I dumped that SP like a shitty girlfriend. Not gonna lie though.... I still think about her every once in a while. Our times together weren't all bad, but she drove me fucking nuts.

honestly I'd just be searching for those modded units that offer CF cards or whatever, if that's even a thing for S Series samplers. I know people did it with MPC2000's
Or am I getting something wrong here?
SCSI refers to hard drive - just read from a big ass CF Card as if you were a ROM sampler and problem solved, right?

The PAiA 2720 Modular Synthesizer from the 1970s. PAiA designed and sold DIY kits at very affordable prices. They were Eurorack before Eurorack was cool. In the age of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman (among others), this was my entry into electronic music when I was very young. The founder John Simonton (who came to my Electronic Music Lab in college once) passed away in 2005, but the company still exists almost 50 years later, though with a much more limited product line.

    I also built their flanger.
    PAiA-Phlanger-Flaneger-Signal-Processor-Cover-2.jpg

And I also lusted over their Stringz 'n' Things string synth. PAiA even had a phone number you could call to listen to a demo.

Well, sort of. SCSI is Small Computer System Interface. It is a Bus, like USB. So devices like a computer, ZIP/JAZZ, CD-R, and Hard Drives can be connected to it, and files can be transferred with a very good data rate. Also SCSI2SD card readers can be used.

They can be either internal or external drives/readers. it does not matter. They are just things which impact prices, by making devices more or less desirable to the average buyer. It doesn't even matter if they are "correct" perceptions, it influences the market for them.

This unit is like you describe, below. Original "Factory" Options almost always add value. Third-Party type of mods usually do not add, and often will lower resale value (even for a more capable machine!). Not to mention, you are bypassing the Analog to Digital convertors which is a big part of "the sound" someone went out of their way to buy the thing for.

s1000 w reader. one look and you know it is not OEM installed:

Oh damn, PAiA!! Forgot all about them! Yeah, I always wanted to try building some of their stuff and never did.

Hey, here's one: made some great demos on this guy back in the day:

If you happen to come across one of these, the seller will probably not know what it is. They run KYMA.

buy it and leave before they have a chance to change their mind. :)
