Karl Richter with an astonishing solo performance!
Karl Richter - Brandenburg Concerto 5 (J.S. BACH)

Bach - Richter Brandenburg Concerts 1-6

Hello, what do you think about virtuosity, originality and respect
(or less respect) for musical traditions? Do you consider some old
masters, respectively their creations as divine?

As an enthusiast for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach i came
across the video (1st one!) showing Karl Richter in a brilliant performance
on a harpsichord. I love the sound of that instrument and i bet
Mr.Bach would be amazed by the great talent of his *modern*
fellow man, who unfortunately died too young (aged 54).
He had great and precise playing skills!

That's one of the most respected video recordings of a concert, by the way. I remember hearing about it in Ivo Blaha's book on dramaturgy of sound, he praised it for being tasteful.
Bach's music is debated to be improvisational music, open to interpretations, so his notation is more of a guideline than a set of orders and rules. I think he'd be amazed with what some people did with his music (Glen Gould as well).

Very, very good! Yesterday i found the respective 3 CD's recorded in Munich.
I already had them many years ago but then i lost them.
    BACH was a great master.

It's one of the most rewarding music-related things you can start learning imo. Especially learning fugues. And, because fugues seem so easy to play if you're listening or watching someone play them, when you try it for your self it makes you appreciate it even more.

Well, I wouldn't have chosen this nick if I did not value the great masters!
I always try to stay away from any debate concerning Historically Informed Performances because it has become a sort of fundamentalist view of music and it is a very slippery ground for many aspects.
I like to think of old compositions like an heritage, they belong to us so we can pretty much do anything we like with them as long as we pay respect and we are guided by good taste. So any interpretation is welcome but it'd better be a damn good one! :bleh:

    Nicely put!

  13. Rothko, another of the masters, is also one of my favorites, but onto the true vein of this page...every time we play any piece, be it a full blown symphony, a happy little fugue or a rendition of an epic Beatles song, we are playing covers, and by the very nature of our own musical limitations and/or strengths, every note, passage and section is really an interpretation. Even the composer is re-evaluating on a note to note basis. That to me is the beauty of art and life in this worldly paradigm. Nothing is ever the same from moment to moment, continually morphing, continually continuing.
