I have yet to find a better bax style plugin than the old freebie Variety of Sound Baxter Eq and i have them all.
It has has that elusive hardware weight, tight low end, clean and sparkly highs. It respects the timbre of the material processed.
What are other freebies that are as good as expensive ones or even better?

Melda free bundle, almost 40 highly customizable and very quality plugins. But some people don't like their GUI, probably the only downside.

32 bits delay made for Disciples, amazing filter modes on the delay section and really good sounding unit!

 

The developer recently upgraded most of them to 64bit and even fixed some bugs. VOS could easily charge 50$ or more for a plugin yet he gave them for free.
You should also check out his Density Mk3 clean glue compression with a drive option, great for subgroups, mixbus etc.
Ferric TDS, great tape style plugin with dynamics and saturation option.
Nasty DLA MK2 , chorus with tape delay, superb for creative mangling.

Vanguard is my favorite, so many crunchy chords I used to make with a trancegate built in... it was amazing. still up and running on my 2009 macbook. it was and ARCADE release I think... still live RG floating around too

Loudmax by Thomas Mundt, a Look-Ahead Brickwall Loudness Maximizer. Very clean sound, made me totally forget that spam-mail company with their ultramaximizing plugins, can't remember their name, something with wave.

 

One great advantage of freebies was the fast load and processing, because the lack of protecting subroutines.
Many of them were released in dx format before VST appears. I loaded them in Cakewalk cubase and FruityLoops.

 

One of the greatest freebies was FruityLoops, early versions were free, super fast and superstable to mangle samples as you want. Many world-hits in many styles were made with it, including new-beat, technno and reggaeton.
