    Hi folks,

I am newbie here & new to proper production.

Around 1996 I had an opportunity to playaround in studio for a few months with Cubase, Novation Bass Station & few sample CDs, had a copy of Reason on the work Mac around 2003, but never really got out of the blocks as it were.

Since then nothing until I Installed Bitwig last month & this is as far as I have got.
I haven't learned mastering/eqing so I attempted it by putting a compressor on the odd track.

Anyway what I want to know does it sound dated?
I think it sounds a bit late 90's commercial trance if you know what I mean.

Its just a four bar loop repeated for 1.00 minute, its a kick & hi-hat sample, Dune 2 playing keys & a arp bass sq.
Although its not the type of stuff I'd buy myself [I prefare Carl Craig & Robert Hood] I choose this trance/dance genre because I think it might be easier to learn the basics - chords, eqing, sidechaining & just basically how synths work.

Anyway I am all set to embark on music production, so expect lots of ridiculous questions in future threads.

    Thanks,

    MCF.

Sounds ok mate. Few things: Keys are drowned into the background, would be nice to be brought forward. kick could maybe do with a bit more weight in the low end. But thats just my amateurs ears :)

    I like it! (followed)

I'd recommend using EQ and do a low-cut on your sounds. It sounds kinda muddled in the mid/low range. Kick could use a little punch as well (like said above).

very decent though!! To give the instruments a little movement, try using something like filterfreak on your sounds, or anything else that modulates filters. you can even do it manually. pulse it back and forth just a bit to give your sound some unique character.

cheers mlb, that ill do me, just wanted to check I as making 'something' correct as regards what key, bpm etc..stuff should be in. I'm only just realizing how deep production actually goes with things like pitching, keys, power chords, velocity, routing etc..etc....I was expecting it to be a lot more straight forward, but it will be an enjoyable learning curve, otherwise I wouldn't do it... I'll get that 'secret sound' one day.

Had a listen to your tunes on SoundCloud, reminds me of the early stuff on Position Chrome.

Weekend trips to Blackmarket Records & the Labyrinth, those were the days.

Thanks for the input thegerman1220, Its only on listening to it myself now uploaded on SoundCloud do I realize how muddy its sounds, there is a backing piano which comes out clearly playing on Bitwig so its lost that in translation also.
I'll try your suggestions. I have not heard it on speakers myself, don't have any at the moment by choice, live in apartment/neighbors etc.. made through a pair of 20euro JVC headphones, though I will need to get a set of monitors soon.

    baby steps ;)

i'd also recomment EQ'ing and compressing everything. Mix in mono. if you can make a great track in mono, it'll sound great in stereo. the worst is making an awesome sound in stereo, then flip it to mono and everything gets lost.
