Cubase stock EQ is also to avoid if possible.

It gets things done, i use it a lot just because its handy and leaves the cpu alone, but it cant compete with something like a nugen seq-st or other better clean digital equalizers.

 

Why don't they precisely emulate their hardware products? Some uads and waves have better emulation products.

Well its probably because Waves and UAD are modeling a completely different console than the SSL channel strip is. So you have extensive hands on time with the 4000E, 4000G and 9000J to say that none of the emulations sound like the hardware?

 

This SSL channel strip 2 sounds different then the previous one with more punch, crispness, and better overall sound. Modeled after the 9000k it’s one of my fav SSL style vst’s now

 

I think that they mostly changed the way the EQ bands look, with MUCH wider curves/Q and more gentle boosts. I don't know if that's closer to how the real E and G desks EQ's work but they are far different than the Waves SSL CS's and you if you boost say +6dB, you get closer to a +3.4dB boost in G mode and a +2.5dB boost in E mode. I like the sound of it and you are supposed to listen to what the EQ does and not look at the numbers, but sometimes it's a bit annoying that you can't trust what the settings say. Also, you can't really do any surgical cuts with the CS EQ as the tightest Q value (=2.5) is the same as a Q value of 0.61 in Pro-Q3 (with a 12dB/oct bell). I do still like it more than the EQ in the Waves one as it's much more musical and a bit easier to get a good sound out of!

 

The best hardware is useless if you don't know what you're doing, you're more likely to make a song worse.
Most of them have a very inconvenient room at home to master. Mastering should be left to professionals.

 

I could probably master a mix to make it a bit better, even in bad conditions. But you are right, If you want it to sound professionally mastered, you are better off sending it to a professional mastering studio.

 

A very honest comment. I think it's good that you trust yourself to be able to do something better.
And the wisdom also has to pay for a professional mixer.

About 8 Months after buying the channel and the comp, I stumbled over a review by Zozilla where he mentioned that you can use these tow plugins in combination with the SSL 360 App without the UC-1 Hardware controller which puts all your SSL Channels and Bus Compressors on a single GUI like a mixing board so you can easly acces all of your channelstrip and comps settings at once – similar to CLA mixhub but just done right. Great workflow improvement.

Soo.. what does it do that makes the audio tracks Glued?

I mean, since it's now Software there oughtta be a mathematical/technical explanation right?

In any case, yes I hear the glueing effect,
and it also has/adds that characteristic SSL Dark tone/coloring..
(always tough this added darkness could be good on Rock/Metal, or very serious Orchestral/trailer stuff etc..)

It's just unfortunate that it doesn't do M/S, this could be interesting on Drums..

And also that it doesn't have more granular, and auto-adaptative attack/release like other units like Elysia comp have,
which (to me) is one key factor that makes it indispensable on a Master Bus..

But yeah I see this unit more of an Instrument Bus, than a Master Bus thing..

nothing a little Voxengo MSED can't handle.

i still get the point though; it would be nice if M/S was a native function of the plugin.

i'm hoping that its 'friend' shows up on the sister site later.

 

i had a chance to fiddle with the SSL UC1 controller at a friend's studio not that long ago, and he also has the SSL 360 App (i guess it comes with it ). that thing is soooooooooooooooooo friggin' cool! and he SWORE by the CLA Mixhub for a good while until all this came along.
