    Hi folks,

Sort of finalised my components list for a new PC build and would like to see your thoughts/comments/suggestions. Here are the components:

    - Case: NZXT H630 ATX
    - Power Supply: Corsair Professional Series AX 760W 80' Plus Platinum
    - Motherboard: Asus x79 Deluxe Intel X79
    - CPU: Intel Core i7 4960X 3.6GHz (Hex Core)
    - CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14-2011
    - RAM: Kingston XMP Beast Series 64GB 1866MHz
    - Storage (System): Intel 240GB 2.5'' SSD 520 Series Cherryville
    - Storage (Samples): 2x1TB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s in RAID 0
    - Storage (backup and other stuff): 1x Western Digital Caviar Black 3TB SATA 6Gb/s
    - Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760DCU II 2GB
    - Optical Drive: Pioneer BDR-208EBK 15x BlueRay RW / 16x DVD+RW
    - Operating System: Windows 7 Pro 64bit

    - Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlet 6i6
    - Sequencer: Cubase 7/7.5

**The PC will be used primarily for Music Production using Cubase 7/7.5 and only at rare occasions for other stuff i.e simulations. I will possibly be overclocking, so I wanna keep temperatures down. Additionally I would like to keep it as silent as possible thus the reason for the inslulated case. I will be using 4 monitors simultaneously (1HDMI + 3 other connectors). I'm not going for a cheaper and/or fanless graphics card bcz I will be utilising the GPU occasionally during my simulations.

Any comments well appreciated cheers

    Storage (system+Samples): 1TB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s

I do not think RAID 0 in real world performance will gain you more than 1 or 2 seconds

    Storage (backup and other stuff):WD RE 3TB 3.5" SAS 6GB/s 7200RPM 32M Buffer OEM Hard Drive (WD3001FYYG)

    Storage (backup and other stuff):WD RE 3TB 3.5" SAS 6GB/s 7200RPM 32M Buffer OEM Hard Drive (WD3001FYYG)

keep a good backup of your SSD drive, 6TB storage space on drive designed to run forever

    hope this helps

Maybe because you didn't experienced it on you own :bleh:

    Look for some proof.

    It almost doubled the performance.

Cheers korgrog , Yes, with respect to real world performance you are right, however I was initially considering going for a PCIe SSD. At the end decided to save some money going with 2x1tb SSDs in RAID 0 with comparable speed... Not sure though if the X79 RAID 0 supports trim so might be adding another 256gb SSD for write intensive files.

Regarding backing up, I will externally back up all of the samples, so thats why I need 3TB, 6TB isnt too much ?

    haha nice to hear!

I do not think you can have two much storage,I just thought if you had one less
SSD you could add extra storage drive
I have built raid 1 and 0 machines never really had long term luck with either
0 machine ,not a real big improvement in real world program performance times
you can get impressive results benchmark programs that does not translate to the
    programs you actually run
1 machine work OK but one hard-drive dies the other is corrupted
had the most luck with the drives they use in servers
You have lots of super ram would think about running virtual ram drive program
loading your program into virtual ram drives,,,,way faster  :dancing:

Guys, I have made a few modifications to the original list of components:
[-] I have removed the watercooling and added a Noctua NH-D14-2011 fan. It will be much silent, and can handle regular overclocking.
[-] I have included a BlueRay burner (thanks captcindy for the tip!).
[-] I have added another 240gb ssd for the system only, while the samples will be on the 2x1TB 840 EVO's. I believe this will be better in terms of management/organisation.

@korgrog I am aware of this, thats why you need back ups. All the SSD sample content will be backed up anyway so I don't think there will be a problem if something goes wrong. Haha can't wait to use this ram yes!!

That's some heavy duty system u have there!

Planning a new build myself too...am getting either a hex core 4930k or 4820k.most likely 4930k.....4960x is way out of my budget and might be an overkill for me...

To be honest 4930k is far more value of money not to mention that you will barely experience any difference between the two. I am indeed considering going for the 4930 instead to save some money there but havent decided yet.

One huge improvement you might want to think about, considering the amount of money it looks like you are able to spend on this, would be a pcie card, like a UAD2 card of some sort. Anytime you can offload some of the processing it will help your system to run even better, although the specs already look astronomical...

It is an overkill and wasteful PC. Especially too much RAM. Nobody needs 64GB of RAM except if you're planning on running a 32GB or more RAM disk which is a much better solution for speed than SSD. Or if you plan on running a server with lots of users. Too much SSD storage, too and RAID is always better to avoid - it's overrated, use more CPU during transfer [not if you have an expensive SATA RAID card with a CPU and RAM like Adaptec one] and a risk for negligible real world usage gains. But if you like to burn money, who am I to tell you anything. :) I always say to buy a computer wisely, there's better and better computers coming out every few months so you can rather save money for upgrades of some kind. I find it far more fun to upgrade parts every few months and save parts for another computer you can sell or give to someone, or just give it to charity. It is never a good idea to buy top of the line PC parts, especially all at once, because they cost uber-top money and get old rather soon. It's always better to buy somewhat middle of the line parts as it saves you a lot of dosh in both short and the long run.

In short: better to buy a mid of the line computer every 6 months than a top of the line every few years if you like to keep up with the tech. But if you're really rich then I don't care if you buy a top of the line PC every 6 months to keep up with the tech. Just go for it and I'm happy for you! The PC industry could use more buyers like you, seriously.

If you're a musician, a better way to burn money is buying "toys". :) There are always interesting audio interfaces, monitors [speakers], MIDI controllers, synths, microphones, preamps, guitar pedals and stuff like that and they mostly cost more to far more than a bloody computer. ;) Well, it might be that you have so much money that it doesn't matter how much you invest into just a PC, which admittedly is at the centre of huge majority of studios these days and if you have more than enough money left for "toys" anyway.

Good idea, Lampwiikk. Buy a UAD Apollo and all their plugins. That's a good waste of money. I do think it's a waste because plugins are also getting better all the time and UAD has been selling old DSP code for years like Waves, but it's useful anyway. It's a great audio interface with good preamps and AD/DA. That can never be a waste of money.

    Cheers!

To chose the right PSU you could use this stuff:

    PSU calculator

    or

    PSU calculator

    Note:
Increase power (WATT) by 10% (...more power is better than less),
