Nothing wrong with it.He did gradual layering, the song is evolving and opening up with synths, guitars and cymbals.
Today people are used to getting vocals served instantly, their attention span is very low.
It used to be common to have long in instrumental intros or middle parts, even in pop songs where you could just enjoy the groove, the band playing.
Example;Queen-Radio Ga Ga,vocals kick in after 1 min and the song contains several longer instrumental parts.

There are changes through the intro, is not a radio edit, it is music with a purpose, a journey, my journey and my feelings. I understand what you say, but when I listen to music I never skip to the drops.

Not exactly the same thing. Firstly the track is 5.40 minutes long, secondly pretty near all, if not all the musical elements are playing by 32 seconds, and thirdly Queen were just how can we say, slightly famous at that time, affording them the room to do various things that probably they wouldn't of had when they were unknown.

Go on Youtube and find the original radio mix of songs from most bands and they were around three and a half minutes long, and things were kicking in some form or another by twenty seconds.Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Human League, Thompson Twins, Talk Talk, XTC, Gary Numan, Blancmange, Pet Shop Boys, Yazoo, add infinitum.

And that's fine, but all I'm pointing out is that short and sweet will get you noticed more easily. Pull them in quick and keep their attention for three minutes. I'm the same, My tracks are way too long. I start jamming instead of keeping it short and sweet.

... are u sure about that ? :winker:

Just my two cents... You shouldn't make music with a 'radio' mix in mind or any 'mix', unless the A&R or that other recordcompany executive specifically told you to do so, so. You should go where the heart and music takes you and try new things. Push the envelope. You can always come back to it and make a change. :) The same goes for judging and critique; go by what is there and how it moves you, and not wether it conforms to 'the standard' or what the f***k-ever commercially imposed frame or setting, wether it is suitable for the 'DJ'. Boo-hah.
Because then you're missing the point completely. Is it compelling? Do I like it or don't I? What could I do with it? That, should be your query in both creating music and passing judgement. But hey, that's just me.
    Cheers!

Yes and some of those songs were cut to a radio edit from the original version.
Not saying you are wrong but he isnt wrong either, its a matter of producers perspective, artistic choices.
He can still re cut it if he wants, but i personally like it as it is,sounds good to me.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood-Relax;original uncut version was used in an episode of Miami Vice,i think it was the first season.
Mind you at the time this tv show was the hottest series on tv worldwide and they played the whole 4:30 intro until the standard Jan Hammer MV title song kicked in.

@The Teknomage , yes I'm familiar with the Queen ouvre. Merely highlighting the slippery assumption; that because of fame Queen pushed the envelope further than they would have when they were not. Knowing Freddy, highly unlikely. Listening to their early work, pretty innovative and 'pushing the boat out' on many fronts. Now. On with the show.
