Hi all..First time forum poster..Long time lurker :) Great site by the way..Long may it last...

Anyways,I need some help with some chords..Have a listen to the track. Not too far in you will hear some rhodesy sounding chords. Please could someone give me some help, and a clear definition of what these three chords are made up of.. i.e what single notes make up these chords..

I just have a little trouble discerning them by ear..I dont need to get too flamboyant with my progressions as this track can clearly carry itself nicely with just the right balance of elements.Thats what I want..Just a nice hook and the rest I can take care of..Oh, and any other chord recommendations in the same vain would be nice..I like the sad/melancholy chords..

Thanks for your help in advance! *yes*

Well... finding chords by ear is very complicated unless you have perfect pitch ear...
What you can do is use a FFT and analize the sound to find the fundamental pitches and those are the notes that compose the chord.
An easy way to do this is to use Melodyne...

    Hope it helps you

Thanks for your reply. As I said I cant discern them so that would suggest that I dont have a perfect pitch ear..Thanks for your help but that seems to be like a little too much effort..I would prefer ( reading here) what makes up the chords individually with out having analyze them with software..Surely someone here can recognize these in an instant..

    Thanks S.von Miller

To me sound like a fun play with chords inversed and pedal.
    They are:
    Am9 - D4sus/A - Am9add/B

    Composed by notes:
    1 chord (a, c, g, b)
    2 chord (f#, g, d, a)
    3 chord (a, e, b, c)

Hoping my ears are working yet... :)

    Good luck

Most likely it´s around a Dominant 7th chord ( but that´s not the destination entirely).
My guitar is not tuned right now, so all I can tell you that it´s around an Ab7 (sus)...
    Which means he plays something like | Ebm7 | Db | Ab7(sus) |
The Ebm7 can even be with or without a Cb (which is a B)...
For the Db ... can also be with a Cb and even have a Gb (the 11th) in there..
Here comes the trick...; it doesn´t end in a Ab7 ... it has a suspension to it and almost a minor feeling (think Gb/Ab), but the Cb is there too.
This is on my detuned guitar...
And I was bored after 3 seconds into the song...
    But it´ll get you somewhere.
    Cheers !

    Thanks Elmoreno,
    So it´s in A then...
In that case, the basis is Em7, D, A7(sus).
On the Em7, play with the #5, that´ll make it a Cmaj.7/E, but the idea is just the same.
This way the D can become a Bm7 too etc..etc..
And the G/A has a C in there too sometimes, which makes it a Am9/11 etc..
Stick with the A Dorian scale and you´ll do just fine !
If the music wasn´t so boring I could help you out some more.
    Oh.. and by the way..
It´s not important what´s being played here...
It´s all modal stuff ( A dorian, nothing out of the ordinary).
Dorian, not aolean...; só sorry... stupid me !
    A B C D E F# G

    Cheers !

Hmm.. sounds like Music isn't going to be a good fit for you then... maybe life.. too. *no*

When did we start rewarding folks with this type of response with effort of our own?

Just a side note: Do I really need "perfect pitch" capability to recognize chords?
If I manage to hear the notes/intervals played, I only need a reference pitch (e.g. a mobile phone synth) to tell the root note of each chord.

I don't know anything about harmony theory, however.

no, i'ts only two chords all the time.
    1. Cmaj7
    2. D
    3. a lower Cmaj7
and the notes are a little detuned
sometimes it ends with a D instead of a Cmaj7

This sounds a little bit jazzy (in a super duper simple way)
    so check out jazz chords.

Chord house is awesome, shows how each chord is structured and has lots of different and unusual scales.
    Check it out.

Oh and Melodyne couldn't be any easier...

Just put it into a polyphonic algorithm and look at what notes make up your chords.

It's not too difficult this one. I make it:
    C maj 7 (C E G B)
    Bm7 (B D F# A)
then C maj 7 again down an octave.

One poster above said D on the second chord but I think the addition of the B is right.

One way to work these out for yourself in future, without Melodyne (hahaha), is to get the top note and add to it, one note at a time, whilst playing along with the track.

Yes you are right, it is a Bm7. but for sake of simplicity i said D.
there is even a Em7 on some places...

    Stensax is right.

That suggestion to use Melodyne was much more ridiculous - and lazier - than your 'too much effort' comment, btw.
