You need to show Acid where the plug-ins are located using the option/preference menu. You will see a tab for VST.
The manual shows you how to accomplish thsi if you have trouble.

I should also mention that a few plug-ins do not work in Acid. I could never get FM7 or FM8 to work properly. Could set them up but never got sound.

Give a more detailed desciption of what plug-in(s) and setup if you still require help.

I'd ditch Acid and start using Live mate.

First off, if you like Acid and it fits your workflow; I recommend using Acid Pro 7, instead of Acid Studio 8. Personally, I like Acid Pro 7, but it is falling behind other DAW's such as Live 8 and Reaper.

To directly answer your question: First select view bus tracks, then select view plug-in manager. Now you can see and use all of your installed Direct-x and VST plugins. To use a soft-synth (there are a million ways) simply click insert/soft-synth. This creates a virtual instrument (shown in the bus area) and automatically connects it to a midi track.

    Super simple stuff

Thanks for explaining it in a simple way. I have not used Acid for quite some time and could not remember the structure accurately enough to name.

    Happy tracking!!
