Because, you know, at times (actually, very often) you want a quick way to do drums. Battery, while ridiculously powerful, is not quick. Ableton's Drum Racks are very convoluted (but powerful, sure), and Impulse is fast but quite limited (fun though). So I could do with a middle ground, and it looks like the Togu thing might just fill the hole.

But I'm OK with dealing with Battery when I really want to dig in to drum and sound design, it's just... an effort to say at the least so sometimes I'd like something that's quick but still has the resources to easily mangle things. Oh well, we can't win can we?

 

No-one has mentioned Backbone? I am using Logic so DMD is all I really need, but I like drum machines too. By the time I get around to using a sample based drum machine though, it is later in a project. So something lighter than Battery can be handy.

Oldie, deprecated, 32bit only, dated modulation, almost nonexistent host automation integration... but still can be cute portable (from daw to daw) tool for sketching ideas. If I'm not mistaken, last version was "FXpansion.Guru.1.6.12".

 

Which DAW are you using? Ableton can do all of this and much more.

Other DAWs can do it too, though it might not be as straightforward. You can use the DAWs audio browser to organize / overview your samples. Load individual samples into the DAWs sampler (in the case of Ableton, the "Simpler" device would be the one to use).

Than route the individual samples to different output channels. Very straightforward. Than you can apply groove settings (Ableton has tons of different Swing / Groove presets that you can quickly apply to the MIDI).

I don't see what is preventing you from using your DAW in this way? It's not rocket science?

If your main criteria is a sample browser to quickly find samples and create unique drum sets, you could use something like Algonaut Atlast or XLN Audio's XO. Playbeat by Audiomodern would be another one to try. All three have great interfaces to quickly find and edit drum sounds and create grooves. It's basically just a matter of preference whether to use any of the three (or another) extra plugins or just use your DAWs capacity. Often I find it easier to stick to the tools included in the DAW, since they are much better integrated into the overall workflow than third party plugins.

 

Serato Sample is more a tool to quickly chop / slice longer samples and then use the individual slices into your composition. Classical HipHop technique. So when you have lots of drum breaks taken from old records Serato Sample is superb. Also great to chop melodical sequences and rearrange the chops. But it's not designed as a tool to browse huge collections of one-shot samples, load individual samples and then built drum sequences with MIDI groove / swing. That's not what it's designed for, there are other tools for that (see my previous comment).

 

I guess I need to elaborate a bit.....

2: organize my wavs / samples/ beats so I can create my own grooves / loops in bpm in my daw
3: Preferably in several channels so it is easy to get a proper overview of the process
4: Easy to use
I´ll add a few more
5: Stand-alone application preferred
6: Can handle at least 32 bars grooves
7: Can handle odd time signatures like 7/8, 5/4 etc
8: Drag & drop feature
9: Rich opportunities to randomize grooves in the application
10: Can handle pitch, reverse etc for each sample

Bottom line:
I need an application where almost everything is possible in an easy and intuitive way which makes the work process creative instead of being technical and time consuming.

So if any of you have experience with an application that have most of the features listed above I would LOVE get some feedback - I need to use it for an upcoming project.

Okay, then it's probably FXpansion Geist2.

 

From what I can gather, you need something like Maschine, MPC, or Geist. You could try MPC-Beats which is free and see how you like it, however Geist is the easiest to use of the three but it comes with a stupid download app and protection so I don't use it. FXpansion plugins and apps are usually a bit buggy. The least buggy of the three is Maschine in my experience. I quite like it. No need for hardware to be able to use it and work fast. You could make whole songs with Maschine and MPC and play them live with a MIDI controller.

The most intuitive of the three is Geist, then MPC, Maschine. In that order and in my opinion.

Well I draw my drums by hand in a DAW's MIDI editor. Also often either synthesize them on the spot or use an acoustic drumkit library, or layer both. Have very few one-shots.

It seems to me that you're trying to get the experience by not getting it yourself. I'm afraid in the end you'll have to either pick the tool and familiarize yourself with it, or abandon the idea. And if you want help deciding what to pick - well, Geist2 does everything you've listed. A slightly outdated version is avaliable on SisterSite.

 

Serato Studio might be worth a shot. Not a full, cluttered DAW, but a standalone application that fullfils your criteria. Other than that Maschine and MPC Software would be worth checking out.

Well, Maschine fits the bill here and if you get the hardware (though not necessary, the software can do this on its own) it becomes really intuitive. MPCs also, of course, but I'm not too familiar with those.

My experience is with Maschine and when you "get it" it becomes something you just do instead of thinking about it.

 

Just use Atlas to organize and than your prefered DAW for stretching etc. i think any daw can do this.

 

I'm kind of scared to recommend this because I don't know if it meets all the requirements... but there you go. It's a new one (one year and change since release)
