UAD LUNA uses iLok cloud. If I install it on one computer will the other two computers on my wireless network become infected with PACE nastiness as well?

No, it is only ever bound to the PC it is installed on. They do not communicate with each other.

Are you actually 100% sure of that? Please understand I ask that respectfully - because I do have empirical reasons to suspect otherwise. Something was unearthed on my system today and I’m trying to understand why it may have happened. Could be coincidental but perhaps not?

    Thanks BEAT16

Let's say pretty sure. Pace/iLok is more local to the CPU. And the CPU has its own number.
It would be a technical miracle if Ilok would exchange with other iLoks.
You lose your ilok license by changing cpu board.

Haven't heard of any (legit) software that can magically transmit "nastiness" to other devices connected to your wireless network. What are your findings exactly friend?

Some old plugins that were dylib’d and were working fine. Then today, after installing LUNA on another mac in my network a few days ago, these plugins returned a PACE missing files error message when an app I haven’t used in a while rescanned my plugins folder (the scan was proper, there were new plugins installed since it was last opened).

EDIT **** DISCLAIMER - This post is a joke, in which I state that installing plugins on my MacBook caused the timer on my oven to throw Pace licensing errors.

It’s intended to provide some light comic relief, but as I now recognise, the wording may have been somewhat ambiguous, hence this disclaimer to avoid any future confusion.

    So, once more -
    this is just a joke.

    Ty, carry on ****

This can 100% happen - just the other day I installed the UAConnect software on my MBP, and downloaded the new UADx versions of the UAD plugins I already own. They also authorise via ilok cloud.

So last night I was making dinner, I go to set the oven timer, and wouldn't you know it, the bloody thing starts chucking PACE missing files errors all over the goddamn place.

Dinner was ruined. I've opened a ticket with ilok support.

It would be nice if you could post the answer from support here.

it still has nothing to do with the original question. UA Luna, as much as I did not like using it; is not going to install anything to other machines across your network without your authorization. That is a worm, basically. Luna sucks, but not that much.

I might agree, except that it seems to have just happened. I would love to get to the bottom of this, does anyone happen to know what files I could search for that PACE would have installed that would have caused the error?

I also installed UA Connect and the spark plugins, along with LUNA at the same time. Please do report back with any info from PACE on this?!?

Haha omg guys, I was literally kidding!

Perhaps my tall tale of utter bs wasn’t worded the best, but take a look at it again - I claimed that ilok corrupted my oven timer. :deep_facepalm:

I had hoped that if nothing else, the deadpan “dinner was ruined” would have given some pointer that my post wasn’t exactly serious.

There is nothing wrong with UA Connect, or ilok. It’s not installing mutating malware that propagates across your WiFi network.

Srsly, think about that for just one second - if they were, and it was THIS EASY to spot, can you imagine the size of the lawsuit that would be brought against them?

The OP is pure paranoia, possibly coupled with some weird gremlin in their system.

    ____________________________________

On a prob-OT-but-related note: Does the constant moaning about ilok not wear anyone out? It’s a simple licensing program - what it does isn’t that complicated. But to hear people talk about it, you’d think it was asking them to chop a finger off every time they wanted to use a plugin.

Even before ilok cloud was a thing, it wasn’t that inconvenient to throw a usb dongle in your pocket, and now that cloud is a thing, at this point it kinda feels like some people are just looking for something to bellyache about.

Also, why is it always ilok? I don’t recall seeing people bitching this hard about elicenser, or the old Reason Ignition Key, or whatever else.

And now that you don’t even need to carry physical dongles, because loads of stuff has moved to the cloud, people are bitching about the cloud.

I realise there’s a certain proportion of people who pretty much think that literally every piece of creative software ever released should be on the sister site for their downloading / collecting / prob-not-actually-making-that-much-music-if-they’re-honest pleasure, and for them ilok cloud is something of a digital nemesis, but I always find it bizarre that it’s just the same couple of moans, over and over every single week…

Copy protection will always be a thing. Unless we get to a point in society where money is no longer a thing. Modern copy protection systems like ilok are absurdly easy to use. Yes, like literally ANY OTHER PIECE OF SOFTWARE, there’s been a couple of issues over the years, but as someone who’s used ilok protected stuff for yeeeeeears, and frequently travels for work, I legit cannot understand what people’s problem is most of the time.

And sure, there’s obvs still a bunch of people who ascribe to the “never ever take a daw online because hideous things will happen immediately” mindset - and tbh the reaction I have to that is pretty much: “Hi, welcome to the 2020’s, you must be new here”

Times change, technology changes. If you can’t, then that’s not a developer problem.

Esp with something as ridic simple like ilok cloud - I’m fully confident I could hand my MacBook to any of my mates preschool-age kids, and they’d figure it out in less than 10mins.

There are literally 100s of other actually hideous things happening in the world at any one time - having to install a tiny program one time to let you open a plugin isn’t one of them.

if you need a "culprit" to justify not buying a program; it's copy protection method will always be a good place to look. :)
